ILLINOIS CAPTURE STROKE

The Problem…

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in Illinois. It is estimated that 700,000 new or recurrent strokes occur annually 1. Specific guidelines have been published focusing on strategies for prevention of strokes, and appropriate interventions can significantly reduce stroke risk 2-5.

The Illinois Registry…

Illinois is one of four states chosen to participate in the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry. The Illinois Registry, known as Illinois CAPTURE (CAre and Prevention Treatment Utilization REgistry) Stroke, has been organized through a collaboration of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Our Purpose…

The purpose of the Illinois CAPTURE Stroke program is to begin a stroke registry in Illinois and to partner with Illinois hospitals to improve the quality of care for stroke patients.

Participating hospitals identify patients who had a Stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack or “mini-stroke”), collect health information, and enter it into a secure, password-protected on-line database. Specifically, questions focus on time of symptoms onset, past medical history, diagnostic procedures, in-patient care, and discharge data.

These data will be used to provide feedback on the quality of care at the specific hospital relative to all registry hospitals. The data from Illinois CAPTURE Stroke will be used by each hospital for its own Quality Improvement initiatives, and may be used to pursue Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) primary stroke center certification.

Quality Improvement strategies will focus on improvement in: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) care, rapid diagnosis and treatment in the Emergency Department, prevention of stroke complications, and prevention of a secondary stroke. Illinois CAPTURE Stroke will assist hospitals in their initiatives to provide professional and public education, improve documentation practices, modify or introduce stroke standing orders, and create other systems and policy changes within their institutions.

Illinois CAPTURE Stroke staff is available to assist participating hospital with all aspects of data collection and Quality Improvement. If your hospital would like more information on participating, please contact Irene Ziaya, the Program Coordinator.
