Stroke is the third leading cause of death, accounting for 7,230 deaths or approximately 7% of the state's deaths in 2001. (National Vital Statistics Report 2003;52(3)).

Adults in Illinois reported the following risk factors for heart disease and stroke:
  • 24.1% had high blood pressure
  • 33.6% of those screened reported having high blood cholesterol
  • 7.3% had diabetes
  • 23.4% were current smokers
  • 61.1% were overweight or obese (Body Mass Index greater than or equal to 25.0)
  • 25.7% reported no exercise in the prior 30 days
  • Approximately 83% had one or more of these six risk factors.

In 2004, Illinois statistics showed that there were over 33,000 hospitalizations for stroke and stroke-related conditions. As you can see from this graph, the rates of hospitalizations and deaths are not dropping significantly.
