to the Department of Orthodontics |
The Department was founded in 1929 with the goal of offering graduate study in orthodontics. Since its inception it has been engaged in research, teaching and patient care. The graduates have contributed greatly to the development of dentistry's oldest specialty. The Department occupies a 6000 square-foot location on the first floor of the College of Dentistry building at the University of Illinois at Chicago with additional space as residents' lab on the second floor. Facilities include a modern orthodontic clinic and clinical laboratory; reception and waiting area; computer, data-processing, and microscopy laboratory; the Brodie Library; orthodontic technique laboratory for photography, appliance construction and plaster work; seminar room; Ricketts Research and Conference Facility; faculty offices; headquarters for ESCO, the Electronic Study Club for Orthodontics; and the Brodie Laboratory for Craniofacial Genetics. |

| December 10 , 2012 - Welcome New Board Members of the Alumni Association |
Special thanks to the outgoing past Board Member of the Orthodontic Alumni Association of Illinois John Lisac, Michael Conlon, and Michael Naboroski. These three individuals have served the Board for 12 years and have been instrumental in the operation and advancement in the Association. They have been in extremely generous in their support of the renovation of the clinic and all were chair level donors in our Quest to be the best fundraising campaign. We are appreciative of their assistance and help in planning the renovation of the Department. | July 12, 2012 - Dr. Bernie Schneider Passed On |
| We are saddened to bring you the news that Dr. Bernie Schneider passed away on Tuesday, July 3 at the age of 84. Bernie had a passion for orthodontics with a 52 year teaching career at the University of Illinois that carried over many generations of orthodontic residents. He has left an indelible mark on the profession and has earned his spot as one of the pillars of the Department. He always had insightful intellect and remarkable wit as well as enjoying a good conversation over a cocktail while working on his golf game. For many of us, in memory he will live forever. Dr. Schneider had a significant impact on many of us both personally and professionally. For those who haven't been able to attend Dr. Schneider's funeral held on Monday, July 9, Dr. Vicent Arpino, Executive Director of the Orthodontic Alumni Association of Illinois, would appreciate it if you forward him a simple statement or quote that he may include in the next Ortho Alumni Newsletter. There will also be a celebration of life service in August. Further information will be forthcoming. | May 14, 2012 - Postgraduate Compensation Program Revised |
Effective July 1, 2012, the new postgraduate student compensation will be 20% of collected fees (applied cash) from services provided by the postgraduate student. This new compensation rate will apply to all postgraduate students currently enrolled in the College and to all new postgraduate students who will enter their programs this summer. Please note that these changes will not affect the disbursements based on FY 12 to postgraduate students or your Departments that are scheduled for July 16 and August 16, 2012. |
| May 2, 2012 - The UIC Department of Orthodontics Offering Special Orthodontic Programs for International Orthodontists |
| With the rapid accumulation of orthodontic knowledge in recent years, there is increased worldwide interest in a concise yet comprehensive course that encompasses recent advances in orthodontics. The Department of Orthodontics at the UIC College of Dentistry is offering a continuing education course of four weeks duration, starting on the first Monday of October, April, and July. The course will provide an update on Orthodontics for international orthodontists. For more information, please click here. |
| The One-year Special Orthdontic Program is designed primarily to provide foreign-trained orthodontists with contemporary orthodontic knowledge and technique so that they will return after training to provide impetus for the further advancement of the orthodontic specialty in their home countries. | Apr 5 , 2012 - Orthodontic Residents Debate about Prophylactic Removal of Third Molars |
| The Class of 2013 initiated a debate about prophylactic removal of third molars under the advise of Coach Dr. Tony Eltink on April 5, 2012. The 8 2nd year orthodontic residents were divided into two teams: 4 on the Floor and Eight Watchers. After a hot debate, Eight Wachers won the most votes of all faculty and residents. |

| Brunilda Ortiz, a 3rd year orthodontic resident, won the Post Graduate Clinical Fellow Award on the 25th UIC College of Dentistry Annual Clinic and Research Day 2012. Her poster presentation titled "CBCT Assessment of Three-Dimensional Changes of the Upper Lip after Le Fort I Maxillary Advancement" was the highly scored presentation in the Clinical and Behavior Sciences category. Ortiz's study investigated how the upper lip responds in three-dimensions to Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy with advancement. Computed tomography scans of 16 subjects before and after surgery were compared retrospectively. Volumetric and geometric morphometric analysis was used to investigate lip volume, thickness and length; nose and mouth width; vermilion border width; and ratio of skeletal to soft tissue changes. Dr. Tzong-Guang Peter Tsay is the advisor of Brunilda Ortiz. One of the dental student awards was given to Dr. Therese Galang's students Amitoj Mehta. Congratulations to everybody! Hurrah! The Clinic and Research Day is an annual event at the UIC College of Dentistry. It allows students, postgrads, and research staff to present their research achievements to the College and the larger research community. Continuing education opportunities, dental products and services exhibits, a keynote lecture and student awards are all part of this day. |
| Mar 28, 2012 - New Look of Administration and Teaching Area |
| Dramatic changes happened during the Spring Break (Mar 19, 2012 - Mar 23, 2012) at the UIC Department of Orthodontics. New desks, new chairs, new cabinets, new working stations and new computers were installed, bringing a complete fresh look to the adminsitartioin area and teaching area. The furniture is a gift of the Orthodontic Alumni Association of Illinois for the goal of creating a more comfortable and efficent teaching environment for the faculty and residents at the UIC Department of Orthodontics.
