Undergraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Economics
I. Purpose
The Undergraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Economics (UCTE) offered by the Department of Economics, University of Illinois of Chicago, is designed to help prepare individuals for careers in teaching Economics and Consumer Economics at the secondary school level. It is intended to complement the university degree and certifications that are normally required for teaching. The UCTE can be obtained by economics majors enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or by students enrolled in any other undergraduate degree program in the LAS.The purpose of the UCTE is to contribute to an improvement in the quality of instruction in the teaching of Economics and Consumer Economics at the secondary level. It will do this by providing training in teaching methods to those receiving a degree in Economics, and by providing training in Economics and teaching methods to those in other disciplines. The UCTE indicates that the student has completed the course requirements and should enhance the recipient's teaching effectiveness and employability at the secondary level. The UCTE is not a state-issued certificate and does not imply state certification.
II. Program Requirements
The UCTE requires completion of five courses (15 semester hours):
I. Econ 220 --Microeconomics: Theory and Applications 3 hrs
II. Econ 221-- Macroeconomics in the World Economy: Theory and Applications 3 hrs
III. Econ 441 -- Teaching Methods in Economics 3 hrs
IV. One of the following courses in applied economics: 3 hrs
Econ 324 -- Economic History of the United States
Econ 326 - - History of Economic Thought
Econ 328 - - Public Finance
Econ 331 - - Labor Economics
Econ 332 - - Urban Economics
Econ 333 - - International Economics
Econ 334 - - Economic Development
V. One course (3 hrs) from List A for economics majors; one course (3 hrs) from List B for other majors 3 hrs
List A:
Ed 200 -- Education Policy Foundations
Ed 210 -- The Educative Process
Ed 410 -- Survey of the Characteristics of Learners with Disabilities
Hist 320-- Teaching History and the Related Disciplines
Hist 420- -Teaching the Social Sciences
Econ 442- - Topics in Teaching Methods in Economics
List B:
Any 300- or 400-level economics course
Note: LAS and CBA students majoring or minoring in Economics may count Econ 220 and 221 towards their major or minor requirements. In addition, CBA economics majors may count the applied economics course (part IV) towards the business electives portion of the major; LAS students majoring in Economics or other disciplines may count Econ 441, the applied economics course (part IV) and the part V course towards their free elective hours.
