Research Facilities and Resources
The University library has more than 1,500,000 books and subscribes to over 17,000 journals, including a wide selection in Economics. The library is also a depository for United States government and Illinois state government publications. UIC students also have borrowing privileges at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which has the third largest university library in the United States. Requested items from the Urbana-Champaign library are brought to UIC within a day by means of a daily shuttle service. UIC students also have access to the Chicago Public Library, which is the second largest public library system in the United States.
The University maintains excellent computer facilities. Mainframe computer hardware includes an IBM RS/6000 running unix AIX (tigger.uic.edu) and SUN model running unix SOLARIS (icarus.uic.edu). In addition to mainframe hardware, students in the Economics graduate program can use the department Linux servers. The computer center maintains a number of PC labs. The Department of Economics also maintains a computer laboratory for graduate students on the 7th floor of UH.
UIC also has a large variety of the latest software. Windows software includes Microsoft Office, Word Perfect, Netscape, Virtual Basic, SPSS, Minitab, SAS MS Project and C/C+. Major statitical packages includes SAS, SPSS, RATS, Minitab and Stata. Software developed at UIC includes SCA, a time series package which was developed by Prof. Lon Mu-Liu and B34S, an advanced econometric software, developed by Prof. Houston Stokes of the Department of Economics.
Graduate students in the UIC Economics Department have access to various data includes OECD, International Financial Statistics (IMF), and US Census Data. Students in the department also have access to the CRSP and COMPUSTAT financial data. Students interested in Urban Economics have access to city and regional models. UIC is a member of the Inter-university consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and UIC users have access to its vast social science data sources through ICPSR Directly http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/.
The Department conducts a weekly seminar series in different economic fields. Seminar presentations are made by UIC faculty, visiting scholars and graduate students. The seminars provide students with feedback on their research topics and help in developing their research skills.
Survey Research Laboratory
The Survey Research Laboratory (SRL) of the University of Illinois at Chicago offers a wide range of services to faculty and students in the area of survey design, use and methods. The SRL also implements surveys for graduate students and faculty.
The UIC Graduate College and Graduate Student Council have funds to support travel to academic conferences at which students are presenting their research.
Traveling Scholars Program
The Traveling Scholar Program enables doctoral-level students to take courses at any of the following universities: University of Chicago, University of Illinois-Urbana, Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Purdue University and University of Wisconsin. Traveling Scholars must have completed at least one year of study in a doctoral program at UIC. There are no additional fees or tuition charges for taking these courses.
Economics Graduate Student Association
The Graduate Student Association supports both academic and social functions, as well as serving as a liaison between students and faculty.
English Resources for Foreign Students
The University has a number of programs to help foreign students improve their English language skills. The English as a Second Language (ESL) department offers writing and speaking courses. Foreign students with the proper background may take composition courses offered by the Department of English. The English Department also operates a writing center, which offers free tutoring to students that are writing papers.
