Dr. Michael J. Barrows is the Director of Endodontic Clinic Operations for the undergraduate Group Practice Clinics. Dr. Barrows did his pre-dental studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1967 to 1969 and received his D.D.S. from the UIC College of Dentistry in 1973. Upon graduation Dr. Barrows accepted a commission as a Captain in the United States Army Dental Corps serving with B Company of the First Medical Battalion, First Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. After being Honorably Discharged, Dr. Barrows entered the Postdoctoral Endodontic Program at UIC and received his certificate in Endodontics in 1977. In 1981, Dr. Barrows received a Master of Science degree in Dental Histology from the Graduate College of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. In 1977, Dr. Barrows was appointed as an Instructor in the Department of Endodontics at UIC and was promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor in 1986. Dr. Barrows has been an undergraduate student, professional degree student, postgraduate specialty student, postdoctoral masters student and member of the endodontic faculty, all at the University of Illinois, for over 40 years. He was named Director of Endodontic Clinic Operations in 1999 and Endodontic Managing Partner Consultant in 2002. In 1997 he was elected as a faculty member into Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society. He maintained a private practice limited to the specialty of endodontics from 1977 to 1994. Dr. Barrows is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontists, the Illinois State Dental Society, the Chicago Dental Society, the Illinois Association of Endodontists and the Edgar D. Coolidge Endodontic Study Club. Dr. Barrows has been involved in all areas of undergraduate clinical endodontic dental education his entire professional career and has served on numerous committees in the College of Dentistry including the Clinic Quality Control Committee 1996-1998, the Endodontic Advisory Committee 1999 - present, the Endodontic Admissions Committee 1999 - 2006, Chair of the Committee of the Web Site for the American Association of Endodontists 1996 - 1998, the Executive Committee of the College of Dentistry 1999 - 2003, UIC Senator 2002 - 2005, the Curriculum Committee of the College of Dentistry 2002 - present, and the Student Promotions Committee of the College of Dentistry (SSP-2) 2002 - present. He authored/co-authored two dental publications. He is Course Director for Endodontics Clinic I, II and III as well as having revised the undergraduate clinical endodontic curriculum in 2002. He also developed the first online endodontic O.S.C.E. examination for undergraduate dental students which was revised in 2007. He created and maintained the original Department of Endodontics web site from 1995 to 2009.

Dr. Barrows was a Supervising Dentist at the Prairie State College Dental Hygiene Program located in Chicago Heights, Illinois from 1994 to 1997 and continues to serve on their Dental Advisory Board; he was awarded "Advisory Committee Member of the Year" in 1997.
