UIC College of Engineering EVL Project Lifelike Reseach Images

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is one of Illinois' two public-assisted comprehensive research universities, and the largest public university in the City of Chicago. UIC has about 25,000 students (16,000 undergraduates, 6,800 graduate students, and 2,200 professional students) with a budget of $1.3 billion and research expenditures exceeding $307 million.

Students of UIC's Electronic Visualization Laboratory pan and zoom through Landsat-7 satellite imagery on EVL's GeoWall2. GeoWall2 is a portable high-resolution (8000x3600 pixels) 15-tile LCD system powered by a 10-node cluster. The UIC College of Engineering is recognized for its academic excellence with undergraduate and graduate programs in six academic departments: Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Materials Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Professor Ken Brezinsky was awarded a 3 year, $368,000 NASA grant to refine the state of chemical understanding needed to make the proposed "Mars Hopper" work. The College has 118 faculty, 1,914 undergaduates and 1,025 graduate students.  One of the College's faculty is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, 47 are Fellows of their professional societies, 24 are National Science Foundation CAREER or Presidential Young Investigator Award winners, and more than 10 are editors of major research journals. The research programs at the UIC College of Engineering have been growing rapidly over the years and are conducted in 6 departments. The UIC College of Engineering is the top ranked public Engineering College in Chicago and we are proud that during 2008-2009, the total research expenditure for the College of Engineering was about $23 million.

Civil and Materials Engineering students fabricate a concrete canoe with a schedule and plan to spend over 600 hours on design and over 700 hours on construction.

The objective for students working at the Biomechanics Research Laboratory is to become a global leader in the field of biomechanics by developing new surgical techniques and tools, providing deeper insight into the mechanical workings of the body, and ultimately improving the lives of patients.
