The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is one of Illinois' two public-assisted comprehensive research universities, and the largest public university in the City of Chicago. UIC has about 25,000 students (16,000 undergraduates, 6,800 graduate students, and 2,200 professional students) with a budget of $1.3 billion and research expenditures exceeding $307 million.
The UIC College of Engineering is recognized for its academic excellence with undergraduate and graduate programs in six academic departments: Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Materials Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
The College has 114 faculty, 1,781 undergraduate and 948 graduate students. Two of the College's faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, 40 are Fellows of their professional societies, 20 are National Science Foundation CAREER or Presidential Young Investigator Award winners, and more than 10 are editors of major research journals. The research programs at the UIC College of Engineering have been growing rapidly over the years and are conducted in 6 departments and 7 interdisciplinary centers. The UIC College of Engineering is the top ranked public Engineering College in Chicago and we are proud that during 2006-2007, the total research expenditure for the College of Engineering was more than $21 million.
