Prospective Employers

For us at the University of Illinois at Chicago, cooperative education is an excellent way to provide an added dimension to engineering education. For you, it can mean new ideas, new contacts with the university and its resources, and even a chance to inspire young engineers with your way of doing things. If you are interested in joining the program, please let us know via the information on our contact page. Our requirements aren't difficult, but they are important.

Engineering Co-op Assignment Guidelines

UIC buildingYour cooperative program should offer the student constructive work experience, clearly associated with the engineering activities of your organization. These should be challenging and productive assignments that will use the student's skills and abilities, meet your needs, and develop the capabilities of the student. As your employee, students should be placed in a position where they can contribute to solving problems and completing assigned tasks.

Salaries earned by co-op students should be a percentage of the starting salaries engineers in similar capacities earn. Wages should be commensurate with job descriptions and responsibilities developed for subsequent co-op employment experiences.

The benefits co-op students receive should be comparable to other temporary employees working similar number of hours. These include policies for paid holidays, travel expenses, relocation, and short-term housing assistance.

Supervisors to co-op students play an important role in assuring a successful cooperative education experience. Therefore co-op students should receive guidance and feedback from their supervisor on a regular basis.

We work with each student to organize their academic program, and develop their resume. Copies will be forwarded to you when you place your job order with the Engineering Co-op Office. For every term worked, we ask that you evaluate our student's performance. We also require our student's to evaluate their co-op experience. Both documents become part of the student's permanent record.

"Our Co-op student was willing to learn and push to excel in the task at hand. The student was very bright and responsive, communicated well, and got along with others well-very good potential. I would recommend the student for future employment-he obtained knowledge about our system and worked very hard."

--CAD Systems/Librarian

"In the process of accomplishing the objective, our Co-op student demonstrated a number of positive attributes-the ability to absorb information, work independently, and interface directly with the engineering staff. Although this was her first assignment as a Co-op, she showed me that she has the capacity to become a very good mechanical engineer."
