Michael Cho gets $1.2 million ONR grant

I am pleased to report that Professor Michael Cho of the Bioengineering Department has received word of a new research grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) on a project entitled, "Determination of nociceptive molecular effects in engineered tissues in response to active denial type 94-GHz irradiation".  This 3-year multi-institutional and interdisciplinary grant from the ONR supports a research effort to provide the Department of Defense in maintaining a proactive stance on the open question of biological effects which arise from exposure to non-lethal weapons.  The techniques of modern optical and mechanical imaging methods, including multiphoton microscopy, laser optical tweezers, and atomic force microscopy, will be used to determine quantitatively biological responses in the stem cell-derived skin and eye model tissues.  The research aim is to elucidate molecular and biophysical mechanism(s) mediating the nociceptive effects induced by active denial systems.

The total funding for the project is $1.2 million.  This is a multi-university project with UIC in the lead, and partnerships with the following schools: Harvard Medical School, Washington University, U. of Arkansas.

Please join me in congratulating Mike.
