Loan Hill Professor of Engineering

Slideshow

I am delighted to announce that Professor Michael Stroscio has been
appointed a Richard and Loan Hill Professor of Engineering for a 5- year term on Sep. 8, 2006.   Professor Stroscio has a 75% appointment
in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department and a 25%
appointment in the Bioengineering department.

Mike received his B.S. in Physics from the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1970 and his M. Phil. and his Ph.D. in
Physics from Yale University in 1972 and 1974 respectively.  He is
internationally known for his contributions in the fields of quantum
transport and phonons in semiconductors and played a large role in
the creation of the sub-field of phonon engineering in nano-structure
devices.  He has played a key role in establishing the national nano- technology initiative by serving on planning groups operating under
the auspices of the National Science Foundation, the White House
Science Office, and the Department of Defense.  He is the author of
more than 300 journal and conference publications and 19 book
chapters and the holder of nine patents.  Prior to joining UIC in
2001, he held a series of federal government positions, the last of
which was as the Principal Scientist at the Army Research Office for
ten years, as well as holding adjunct professorships at several
universities.  Mike is a Fellow of the IEEE, the AAAS, and the
American Physical Society.  He was named a University Scholar in 2004
and is the recipient of the Issai Lefkowitz Award and the IEEE Harry
Diamond Award.

The College of Engineering has received three $500,000 Professorships
thanks to the generosity of Richard and Loan Hill.  The two  other
recipients of the Hill Professorships are Professor Ahmed Shabana of
the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department, and Professor
Ouri Wolfson of the Computer Science department.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Mike Stroscio on this
recognition.
