SHPE National Conference News
At the National Conference October 27-31, 2010 at Cincinnati, Ohio, SHPE-UIC received 3 very prestigious and coveted awards that recognized them nationally.
- National Student Role Model of the Year
Joel Mendoza a sophomore majoring in Mechanical engineering received it.
The award is given to student member who has provided selfless and outstanding contributions to their SHPE student chapter and the Hispanic community, while at the same time, maintaining academic excellence.
- Academic Achievement of the Year
- 2nd place Academic Olympiad
- It is a written and trivia competition. The first round is comprised of the written portion while the second round is a Jeopardy-style tournament before a full audience. There are 7 regions to include all 50 states + Puerto Rico. The team with the highest points for the written portion then competes in the trivia part for its respective region. SHPE-UIC is in Region 6 thus competing with 9 other universities to represent their region. Once they represent their region all seven regions compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Olympiad. The competition test students in the areas of Bioengineering/mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry (Organic & Inorganic), Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering/Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Economics, General Science (Trivia), Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Statistics.
- Each of the participants received a complimentary registration and a cash prize from SHPE National for they outstanding participation
- Team Members: Jaime J. Encarnacion (Civil Engineering), George Alvarez (Electrical Engineering), Janis Maldonado (Civil Engineering) and Oscar Marquez (Electrical Engineering).
