Preparing for an Engineering Career
Mathematics
- Those interested in pursing careers in science and engineering should take
as many mathematics courses as possible.
- Students should try to master the topics presented by doing extra work in
the subject matter.
- If possible, students should enroll in enrichment courses or programs offered
by their high school and programs with a focus on science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics.
Computers
- Students should pursue as many programming classes as possible.
- Exposure to programming languages such as Pascal, FORTRAN, C, C++, and JAVA
are very useful.
- A good understanding of Computer History will help students understand computer
engineering & computer science careers.
- Ideally, students should understand different applications of computers
especially word processing, spreadsheet, database, and desktop publishing
applications.
English
- Engineering tasks are usually in the form of word problems.
- English Comprehension is very important for engineering students.
- Communication skills make good engineers excellent.
- Writing practice is highly encouraged for high school students.
Extra-Curricular
- Sports activities involve communication, teamwork, physical & mental
stamina, and competition;all of which are helpful skills in engineering.
- Students should pursue project-based activities such as yearbook committees
and science fairs.
- Understanding how to manage a deadline is a valuable asset.
Other Considerations
- Having a well-rounded background about history, people, technology, and
current events makes engineering students marketable when in competition for
engineering jobs. It also gives them an understanding of where their chosen
field is heading. The Internet is an excellent source for a variety of information.
- Watching television may limit a young person's own creativity and perception
of the world. Students should watch science and technology programs and channels
such as NOVA, the Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel (TLC), and the Public
Broadcasting Station (PBS).
- Students should consider having productive summers. Reading lists, academic
summer programs, and summer enrichment courses are available.
