Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering

Emerging Leaders in Technology & Engineering (E.L.I.T.E), a peer mentor program, was implemented in Fall 1994 to provide encouragement and support to freshmen and transfer students in the first semester in the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The overall goal of ELITE is to support underrepresented students in building confidence through supporting relationships and to develop skills to succeed in engineering. All new students to engineering are invited to participate in ELITE to help make the first semester more personable and meaningful.

Participation is highly encouraged.

E-Mentoring

During the Fall 2004 semester, MERRP introduced an electronic mentoring program designed to connect UIC engineering undergraduates with engineering professionals throughout the Chicago area and beyond. A mentor provides support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example. Mentors are trusted advisors or teachers who care and want to help others bring out strengths that are already there. In today's busy world, face-to-face meetings are not always possible. Through e-mentoring, students will have the opportunity to be mentored by an engineering professional by way of frequent emails during the school year.
