Dear alumni and friends:
Many exciting things continue to happen here at UIC’s College of Engineering. During the last six months I have been positively impressed by the vast array of College of Engineering student organizations and their meaningful activities. These groups help build a strong sense of community among our students, while enhancing our educational programs and community outreach. A few examples include the following:
Our UIC Engineers Without Borders chapter has continued its excellent work in Cerro Alto, Guatemala with a group of students, faculty, and staff traveling to Guatemala to begin plans for the next work project. This organization was recognized for its outstanding work at the University of Illinois Board of Trustees’ meeting on January 17, 2008.
Our IEEE Student Branch had a three-page feature article on its rebuilding activities in the January/February issue of the IEEE Potentials magazine. The article described the efforts of our UIC IEEE Student Branch’s leaders to build a vibrant and active student branch. The article was written to provide a positive example to other IEEE Student Branches around the world, and included a list of 13 tips from our IEEE Student President Amir Zohar.
On January 15th I had the privilege of visiting our Engineering Design Team’s laboratory, to see and discuss their intense preparations for the Jerry Sanders Robotic Competition next month. This EDT student group consists of students from the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Computer Science focusing on interdisciplinary efforts in robotic engineering.
These are just a few of the many examples of student groups and activities in the College of Engineering.
On Friday, February 1, despite a record breaking snowfall, the Engineering Alumni Association and the Engineering Career Center hosted another successful Engineering Career Prep Day, which is now in its 11th year! Over 100 engineering students and 17 alumni mentors braved the inauspicious weather and attended a fun filled and informative day. Rick Schmidt and Yvonne Liebelt moderated the morning panel discussion, which delivered expert insights and many amusing stories from our alumni panel's personal career adventures. Thank you again to Rick Schmidt, Yvonne Liebelt, Edward Yousif, Frank Riordan, John Molburg, Kam Liu, Keith Alsburg, Lauren Zavadsky, Tomasz Szelewa, Michael Goluszka, Michael Hoag, Nancy Rocha, Raj Patel, Truman Chua, Vishal Shah, Eric Gesell, and Dan Hernadez for making this such an extraordinary day for our students. A special thanks to Kate Kaplan, Director of the Engineering Career Center, and her student assistants, Jade Webber and Peter Tek, for another successful event.
Sincerely,

Peter C. Nelson
