American literature, cultural studies

Chris Messenger's current research focus is a book on the multiple meanings of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is The Night.  He has his eye on E.L. Doctorow for his next victim.  His long term interests are in male sentimentalism in twentieth century fiction, its discontents and subilmations.  His most recent book is The Godfather And American Culture: How The Corleones Became "Our Gang" (2002), a primer of approaches to the study of popular fiction through an American popular "classic."  He is also the author of two books on sport and play in American fiction (1981,1990).
