Grants, Fellowships and Awards
In the spring of each year, the department offers the Undergraduate English Award for Creative and Critical Writing. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in critical and creative writing by undergraduate English majors. One award is given for critical writing and one award is given for creative writing. Each student may submit a sample of no more than five pages of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, or critical writing. Winners and finalists will receive a substantial monetary award and will be recognized at the end-of-the-year English Department celebration.
The Campion and Newton Scholarships are both awarded to outstanding English majors who have graduated from Chicago public high schools. Applicants must have at least 30 but not more than 90 semester hours at the time of application and a minimum GPA of 2.0. The amount of the award for each scholarship is $500 to be credited toward tuition and fees.
Each year, one student is chosen by the faculty for the Ernest C. Van Keuren award, a $200 award which the department presents annually to its outstanding graduating senior. The winner is chosen by the faculty from among those students who are graduating with highest distinction.
The Robert and Corinne Silver Award is a $500 prize for a continuing undergraduate English major concentrating in literature. To be eligible, you must be a continuing English major of sophomore standing or above (seniors graduating in Spring 2008 are not eligible); have a concentration in literature; preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate academic ability; demonstrated financial need may also play a role in the final decision.
