internship program

The English Department offers a six-credit internship course for English majors and minors. Students are enrolled in the course, English 493, while working 10 or more hours a week in an internship. An internship provides the experience that employers seek.

Internship Availability:  fall, spring, summer

LAS Prerequisites:         
1) Grade point average of 2.5
2) Nine courses in English including 160, 161 and 240.
3) ENGL 202 (Media and Professional Writing, Please note the prerequisite is 240)
4) Consent of the instructor
  
Transfer students must complete their first semester at UIC prior to obtaining an internship.  
    
Employers: community newspapers, public relations firms, non-profits,
small businesses, others

Interviews are required with:

1) Linda Landis Andrews (1929 UH), who helps students prepare an employment packet. Send questions about the internship program to her.

2) All students doing internship MUST register with the LAS-COOP, Robin Hursey (350 UH) who discusses goals, reviews packets, and coordinates a student's candidacy with a minimum of ten employers. Call to set up an appointment 312.996.0425.

Once hired, students register for English 493. Assignments in this course include keeping an internship journal, interviewing a decision maker in the organization, and analyzing the culture. Students also will learn business communication so they can be effective in presenting their ideas in the business culture.
