The Biostatistics Consulting Lab (BCL) is a service unit that resides within the Epidemiology-Biostatistics division and serves the UIC medical community as well as the Chicago land community. The primary goal of the BCL is to promote inter-disciplinary research by providing good quality biostatistical consulting services to the UIC medical community. The BCL has been serving the community for over ten years.

Services offered by the BCL

Fees for the Consulting Services

The Biostatistics faculty of 8 members share the requests for services and each faculty has his/her own philosophy on defining their compensations for the time spent on providing consulting services. However to find out more about our fees please contact the BCL director.

Benefits for Students

The BCL provides opportunities for M.S. and Ph.D. students in the Biostatistics program to acquire hands-on experience in data entry, data management, data cleaning, data summary and some data analysis. In most cases students work under the supervision of the faculty. Students also find problems for research to do their Ph.D. The BCL has provided support, in the form of T.A's, to up to 2 students every semester in the past few years. In addition, faculty who provide the primary consulting services use students to assist them in performing some of the straightforward analyses. This practice provides much needed supplemental income for the students.

Participation of the Epidemiology Faculty

In the past, the BCL services have been provided solely by the biostatistics faculty. Presently, however, in the recent past the epidemiology faculty also have brought in funds by providing epidemiological consulting services to the community. Since the BCL resides within the Epi-Bio divisioni, it is natural to include the epidemiology faculty in the BCL workforce. This, in addition to bringing in more funds to the Lab, provides a medium for both the epidemiologists and the biostatisticians to promote inter-disciplinary research in the community.
