EPIDEMIOLOGY

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) offers a program leading to the Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree with a major in Epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease and is considered to be the core discipline of Public Health.

The MPH degree provides students with a broad base of public health knowledge concentrating on epidemiology. This prepares the graduate for administrative or policy roles in federal, state or local public health service programs. The Ms and PhD degrees introduce students to research methods in epidemiology and prepares them to lead research careers; the MS to participate in larger scale collaborative studies and the PhD to develop independent research in a variety of government, academic or private institutional settings.

Epidemiology is a bridge between quantitative methods and the medical sciences, and graduates are expected to have a solid understanding of epidemiological concepts and methods, an overview of current chronic and infectious disease occurrence patterns and etiology, and a basic knowledge of statistics. These degree programs are intended to provide the graduate with the expertise to apply current knowledge and methods to develop research which will increase our understanding of disease in a disease area of his/her choice.

University fellowships
Opportunities are available for Masters and Doctoral level students to assist in ongoing epidemiologic studies (for example an aids prevention program, cancer control project and Alzheimer Disease registry are currently ongoing in the program with longterm funding).

BIOSTATISICS

The Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division at the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) offers a program leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees with a major in Biostatistics. Biostatistics is the application of statistical methods to problems in the areas of biology, medicine, public health and other life sciences.

The Master's degree in Biostatistics is appropriate for persons interested in:

  1. Obtaining employment at an intermediate level, either in the pharmaceutical industry, in government, or, in the academic setting.
  2. Pursuing a doctoral degree
In either situation, the individual is expected to have a strong grasp of fundamental techniques of data analysis built upon a background of basic methodological knowledge. Beyond the strictly statistical foundation, the master's level biostatistician must have a solid understanding of epidemiological concepts and methods, including study designs important to the epidemiologist, and an ability to explain statistical methods and interpret analytical results to the non-statistician.
