This course is a general introduction to mineralogy and covers the crystal structure, chemistry, and identification of minerals and materials. The first 20% of the course is an introduction to crystallography, followed by an introduction to mineral identification techniques, such as physical properties, optics, and X-ray diffraction. Basic crystal chemical concepts are illustrated. Introductory information is provided to understand how chemical composition and structure relate to minerals and how to determine chemical formulae. The course develops the basics of materials from which all other courses in EaES are derived. A complete syllabus of this course is available.
