Is that dirt?
Yes,
but to a sedimentologist like Dr. Tornqvist and his graduate students Scott Bick, Juan Gonzalez and Zenon Mateo it is much more than dirt. Basal peat deposits contain pollen grains which can be dated. Peat from the Mississippi delta region provides information about Quaternary sea levels.
