Yes, but to a sedimentologist like Dr. Tornqvist and his graduate students Scott Bick, Juan Gonzalez and Zenon Mateo it is much more than dirt. Basal peat deposits contain pollen grains which can be dated. Peat from the Mississippi delta region provides information about Quaternary sea levels. Tired but happy Ex-Terra Society member Scott Bick braves rain and bugs in Louisiana. Scott recently graduated and is now a Terra Society alumni member. Juan L. Gonzalez takes a core for isotopic composition analyses. Patia, an undergraduate, gets some experience (and a shower!). Exemplary undergraduates are encouraged to participate in field work.
