Geology of the Chicago Region

Photography and Geology

Geology of the Chicago Region

The geologic story of the Chicago region is one of Silurian seas and nautaloids; of glaciers, lakes, and rivers; of soils, agriculture and urban development. Most members of Terra Society are students in UIC's department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. In EaES courses students can go out to explore the geology of Chicago. Terra Society member and EaES alumni member Scott Bick captured these photos of Chicago area geology as a TA on a EaES 101 field trip.

Why are they staring at a rock?
This is a glacial erratic, a rock carried from its source by a glacier.

Fossil hunting 101
The rocks in this quarry date to a time when Chicago was under warm seas. Students have an opportunity to fossil-hunt in these rocks as part of the EaES 101 field trip.

Toboggans?
Of course, the toboggans are not a natural geologic formation, but the toboggan run was built on top of a natural form. This 101 student is looking for signs that will tell her what processes - wind, water or ice - formed this landscape.

Going for a hike
One of the best things about geology is that you get to work, learn and teach outside.
