Getting a closer look

Dr. Plotnick (foreground), Terra Society advisor, leads his paleontology students in a hunt for fossils at this Illinois quarry.
Ex-Terra Society alumni member and now research speicalist, Miroljub Medved (aka Meda) looks on.
Who is that way out there?

That's Laura Porro, showing off the quarry. She just graduated from UIC and is a Terra Society alumni member. She is also a Goldwater Scholar and a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She'll be studying at Cambridge in the fall. Best of luck, Laura!
Making an impression

These are the impressions of crionoid roots.
Crionoids are also known as "sea lillies," and have been on Earth since the Ordovician. They are members of the phylum Echinoderrnata, along with starfish and sand dollars. The crionoid that made this impression lived over 400 million years ago.
"I think what I like best about paleontology is that it's a lot like looking through a window into an ancient world. You hold 400 million year old nautiloid in your hand and you say,'Wow, once upon a time this was alive, and I'm the first person to see in millions of years."
