Information For Prospective Majors And Minors

The Department of Germanic Studies provides educational opportunities in Germanic languages, cultures, and literatures. Our instructors and faculty offer courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. These cover such areas as German and Yiddish language, business German, foundations of language teaching and learning, the study of gender, class, and political issues in German texts, minority cultures, film, opera, science and literature, philosophy, and German-Jewish culture. The undergraduate program allows students to develop their skills in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing German while familiarizing them with the language, literature, and culture of the German-speaking regions of the world. We encourage our undergraduates to develop interdisciplinary areas of concentration, to gain professional internship experience, and to study abroad in Vienna, Munich, and Berlin. The Department offers students a BA with a major or a minor in Germanic Studies, a German major with a Business Minor, and a major in Teacher Education in German. We also encourage students to choose a double major with German in order to expand their knowledge and opportunities. Students with any of these degrees may use their training as the basis for graduate study or in a variety of occupations including teaching, translation, international marketing, banking and commerce, diplomatic service, journalism, and the arts.
