2001-December 2002 Acting Director, Direct the Teaching of History programs, Department of History, University of Illinois at Chicago

-- oversaw undergraduate and graduate level programs leading to secondary certification in history. Coordinated all aspects of the program, including teaching courses, advising undergraduate and graduate students, and supervising student teachers. Presently working with an advisory committee and the department on a major revision of program requirements to meet Illinois state teacher education standards and NCATE standards. Acted as a liaison between the College of Education and the Department of History and served on a university-wide committee that advises on matters related to secondary education. Maintained and developed relationships with schools, cooperating teachers, and graduates of the program.

1999-2001 Visiting Program Associate, College of Education, University of Illinois at Chicago

--Served as a program associate on the Big City Teacher Preparation Initiative funded by the MacArthur Foundation. Provided research and resources on issues of diversity and intercultural competence in urban teacher preparation and worked with program coordinators to redesign pre-service education programs to meet state and national standards.

1996-1999 Senior Program Associate, Facing History and Ourselves, Chicago, IL

--Designed and facilitated teacher institutes and provided ongoing professional development to educators. Worked with teachers to help engage students of diverse backgrounds in rigorous and in-depth examinations of history. Co-authored a $575,000 multi-year school reform grant funded by the Chicago Annenberg Challenge Foundation to work intensively with teachers, parents, community members, and administrators of three Chicago Public Schools on curricular and structural issues to improve the quality of education for students.

1995 Program Director, First Place School, Seattle, WA

--Directed an educational and social service program for homeless children in grades kindergarten through six. Integrated the education and social service programs forming a more cohesive model and increasing the quality of services for students and their families. Worked with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community coalitions to gain access to services for students and families and to procure resources for the program.

1989-1995 Eastside Catholic High School, Bellevue, WA

--Vice Principal of Academics, Eastside Catholic High School (1991-1995)
Provided leadership in a co-educational secondary school serving grades nine through twelve by articulating the primary role of academics in the school and worked to establish policies and procedures to support that role. Developed and implemented curriculum along with academic department heads and faculty. Supervised six academic department heads, 40 faculty members, and support staff. Coordinated and conducted faculty, staff, and parent training.

History Teacher, Eastside Catholic High School (1989-1995)

--Developed and taught courses in world history, Western civilization, U.S. history, political science, and economics. Developed and co-taught a college-credit course integrating economics, government, human relations, social science inquiry methods and rhetoric.
