The UIC Teaching of History program has been preparing
secondary school history teachers for nearly four decades, graduating over 1000 prospective teachers since 1966.
Many of our graduates are now teaching
in the city of Chicago and its surrounding communities, confirming UIC's long-standing urban mission as well as its
wider appeal.
Our program prides itself on its strong foundation within the historical discipline.
In line with current calls for more discipline-based training for teachers, students in
both the BA and MAT
programs focus on learning historical content and inquiry. Methods courses within the
history department emphasize the philosophy and politics of historical pedagogy, as well
as the nuts and bolts of actual classroom practice. When combined with College of Education
courses, this background prepares students to bring their love for the past into a wide
variety of middle- and high-school classrooms.
At UIC, students interested in teaching History / Social Studies at the high
school level in Illinois have three options:
Undergraduates may choose coursework
for a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in the Teaching of History, which fulfills state
requirements for the teacher's certificate.
Graduate students may work toward a Master of Arts in the Teaching of History (MAT), in both
certification and non-certification tracks.
An ancillary program run by UIC's College of Education allows students to
pursue a Master of Arts in Education (MEd). In this program students concentrate more
systematically on pedagogical issues with history as a subject focus.
In all three programs, History
Education students in clinical courses learn about life in secondary
schools through first-hand experiences, with student teaching the culmination
of these.
