Employee Development Program

The Employee Development Program (EDP) supports the continued development of UIC’s academic professional and support staff employees by providing an annual opportunity to review and evaluate an employee’s past performance with an eye towards establishing mutually agreed upon development goals for the upcoming year.  EDP is conducted each calendar year during the period of May through July (unless otherwise directed by specific policies in the UIC Medical Center).  For 2007, there is a new appraisal form to be used by Supervisors for both Academic Professional and Support Staff.

The EDP Program has three (3) major elements:

  1. Performance Appraisal
  2. Development Assessment & Action Planning
  3. Ongoing Feedback

Key steps in the EDP program include:

1.        Performance Appraisal

  • Review the job description or job duties and update as required (Supervisor and employee)
  • Complete the UIC Employee Appraisal (done by both the Supervisor and the employee individually and then together)
  • Finalize and sign the completed UIC Employee Appraisal (Supervisor and employee)
  • File a copy of the signed UIC Employee Appraisal in the employee’s personnel file within the department.

2.        Development Assessment & Action Planning

  • Define a mutually agreed upon plan to address job-specific developmental improvements using the UIC Employee Development Action Plan (done by both the Supervisor and the employee individually and then together)
  • Finalize and sign the UIC Employee Development Action Plan (Supervisor and employee)
  • File a copy of the signed UIC Employee Development Action Plan in the employee’s personnel file within the department.

3.        Ongoing Feedback

  • The UIC Employee Development Action Plan should be leveraged as a reference tool to facilitate periodic progress discussions between the supervisor and the employee throughout the year.

Every UIC academic professional and support staff employee who will have been employed for six months as of July 1 is expected to participate in the EDP review process between May 14  and July1, 2007.

Employee Development Program (EDP) Workshop for Supervisors

Employee Development (EDP) workshop sessions are available for supervisors who are using an established University process to evaluate employee performance for the first time; experienced supervisors may also find the workshop helpful as a refresher.

During the EDP Workshop, you will learn:

  • the steps of the EDP process and how to implement them effectively.
  • to plan and conduct a "Pre-Meeting" with each of your employees prior to holding the actual performance review session.
  • to use the EDP forms to plan and document the performance review.
  • strategies for conducting an effective performance review session.
  • to develop an action plan with input from the employee to identify developmental goals and activities for the next review cycle.

Training will take place in the Human Resources Building (HRB) at 715 S.Wood Street, Room B-1 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm on the following dates:

  May24
  May30
  June 6
