Career Management FAQ

There are many points to consider when managing your career at UIC. Just knowing when to seek job performance feedback and when to confirm training to address skill development needs may present multiple questions in your mind. A few questions (with answers) that may arise as employees think through the Career Management process at UIC are listed below.

Q1. Is the Employee Performance Review (EPR) process replacing the Employee Development Program (EDP)?

The Employee Performance Review (EPR) process is intended for Academic Professionals and Open-Range Civil Service Support Staff. The forms associated with the former Employee Development Program (EDP) are for Civil Service employees covered under a union contract.

Q2. Are Employee Performance Reviews mandated?

Employee Performance Reviews are not mandated. For additional information, please see Policy602B, Employee Performance Review for Academic Professionals (pdf), as well as Policy 602, Employee Development Program (pdf).

Q3. Who should receive an Employee Performance Review?

All UIC employees should receive an Employee Performance Review. Forms and policies associated with Employee Performance Reviews vary across employee groups. Academic Professionals and Open-Range Civil Service employees should follow the process and use the forms associated with the Employee Performance Review Process for Academic Professionals referenced in Policy 602B. Faculty, Union-Represented Civil Service, and UIC Medical Center employees should consult with management in their area to confirm appropriate policy and process for employee performance reviews.

Q4. Who should complete the Employee Performance Review?

This may vary depending on the College/Unit. Generally, it will be the employee’s direct manager/supervisor. Please check with your College/Unit to confirm.

Q5. Does the annual Employee Performance Review need to be completed by a specific date?

Each year Employee Performance Reviews are completed from May through July (unless directed by specific policies in a department). When completing the annual performance review, consider the employee’s job performance throughout the fiscal year—July 1 to June 30. The annual performance review should be completed for each Academic Professional and Open-Range Civil Service employee by July 31. In addition, the Employee Development Program form should be completed for each Civil Service employee covered under a union contract by July 31.

Q6. What is the UIC Employee Performance Review cycle?

There are four cycle components: Performance Planning, Coaching/Guiding, Reviewing Performance and Career Development.

For additional information, please see the EPR Cycle

Q7. What is the UIC Employee Performance Review Process?

The UIC Employee Performance Review process includes five steps.

Step 1: Confirm Performance Expectations
Step 2: Provide Continuous Feedback
Step 3: Document Performance Progress Notes
Step 4: Conduct Annual Performance Review
Step 5: Create Individual Employee Development Plan
