Managing Your Career
Your Annual Review

‹ Overview | Performance Expectations ›

For UIC to thrive as world-class organization it is essential that every employee pursue and attain professional excellence. To that end, UIC has created an environment wherein your professional development and performance are supported year-round by guidance, encouragement, and learning opportunities.

Your annual Employee Performance Review is a key step in your continuing professional development at UIC.

Both Academic Professional and Civil Service employees participate in the review process, which takes place each year between May and August 15.

What to Expect

Your annual Employee Performance Review presents an opportunity to assess your progress at UIC and plan the next steps that will lead to the achievement of your professional goals. During the review you will meet with a manager, usually your direct supervisor, to review your accomplishments during the prior year and discuss performance expectations, development opportunities, and personal goals for the next year.

Prior to the Review

You can prepare for your review by completing a Self Review (DOC) prior to meeting with your manager. The Self Review will help you identify your accomplishments, assess your progress, and reflect on your goals for the coming year.

During the Review

You and your manager will discuss your current job performance and identify opportunities for you to improve and enhance your skills. In addition to your job-related performance, you will assess your grasp of the Core Competencies recognized at UIC as essential for all high-performing professionals. The annual review is your opportunity to take stock of your progress, ask for frank feedback on your performance, and seek guidance about how best to advance your career.

Following Your Review

You will receive a written copy of your Employee Performance Review and your manager will file a confidential record within your college or unit (separate from your employee personnel file).

As part of the review process, you and your manager will collaborate to complete an Individual Development Plan (DOC) that outlines the specific steps you can take during the course of the year to improve your job performance and advance your career goals.

If specific concerns about your job performance were identified during the review your manager may prepare a Performance Improvement Plan (DOC) that provides near-term guidance and instructions to help you quickly address performance issues and get back on track to pursuing your career goals.

During the Following Year

Pursue the goals outlined in your Individual Development Plan and touch base with your manager often to report on your progress and request guidance and feedback. Take advantage of the extensive professional Development Resources offered to you at UIC by participating in web-based and classroom learning and Document Your Progress.

UIC is devoted to helping you thrive as a professional and achieve your career ambitions. Your annual Employee Performance Review helps point the way to success.
