Visiting Fellow Seminar Series
2003-2004

For two to three weeks each year, this program brings to the University of Illinois at Chicago community a scholar whose innovative work has played a crucial role in reconceptualizing the disciplines of the humanities. Seminars are open to faculty and advanced graduate students.

The 2003-04 Institute for the Humanities Visiting Fellow is Carlo Ginzburg, Franklin D. Murphy Professor of Italian Renaissance Studies, UCLA. He will be in residence at the Institute for the Humanities from October 17-30, 2003, offering two seminars on “Machiavelli and the Art of the State.”

Seminars will take place in the Institute for the Humanities, lower level, Stevenson Hall, and are open to faculty and advanced graduate students. Preregistration is highly recommended. To preregister, please contact Linda Vavra, 996-6354, lvavra@uic.edu.

Professor Ginzburg will also deliver a lecture titled: “Aping Nature: Reflections on a Late Medieval Metaphor” on Friday, October 24, 2003. All members of the campus community are invited to this lecture.

Many scholars have recently argued that Machiavelli’s “art of the state” was related to a republican tradition based on ancient models. The seminar will address this issue from a new angle, exploring the relationship between Machiavelli’s works, The Prince and Discourses on Livy.
