Set in the heights of the Bolivian Andes, Mamachas del Ring is the story of Carmen Rosa the Champion, an indigenous woman who struggles to make it on her own in the male-dominated world of Bolivian professional wrestling. Up until Carmen arrived, Bolivia had never seen an indigenous woman take her petticoats and bowler hat into the ring, and the crowds couldn't get enough. Ebony Goddess follows three women as they compete in the Carnival Queen beauty pageant. ELLA ES EL MATADOR / SHE IS THE MATADOR
DIRECTORS: GEMMA CUBERO, CELESTE CARRASCO
SPAIN / 62 min
Nothing expresses Spain's traditionally rigid gender roles more powerfully than the image of the male matador. So sacred was the bullfighter's masculinity to Spanish identity that a 1908 law barred women from the sport. This film reveals the surprising history of the women who made such a law unnecessary and offers fascinating profiles of two female matadors currently in the arena: the acclaimed Mari Paz Vega and Italian-born, Eva Florencia. The film is winner of the All Access Creative Promise Award for Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival.
