Latino Heritage Month is a celebration of the history, culture and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. A list of events on the UIC Latino Heritage Month calendar at UIC are listed below.
Please note: events marked with an asterisk (*) are being organized by the Latino Cultural Center and/or the Latino Heritage Month planning committee unless otherwise noted they are FREE and open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
*Tuesday, September 15: Latino Heritage Month Opening Celebration: Vamos a Celebrar! A celebration of the Latino culture with live musical performances, dance performance, food and informational opportunities regarding Latino resources on campus. Opening remarks by Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares |
| *Thursday, September 17: Middle Preclassic Maya Economy, Society, and Culture at Cuello, Belize Prominent Maya archaeologist, Professor Norman Hammond will give a public lecture with a reception to follow. Topics include the Maya culture, emergence and decline of complex societies and ancient Maya trade. In collaboration with the Department of Anthropology, Department of Art History and the College of Art and Architecture. |
Thursday, September 17: Shifting the Paradigm of Feminicide Studies Lecture by Rosa-Linda Fregoso, Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Reception to follow. Presentation includes the development of the concept "feminicide" in legal, social, cultural and political terms and provides a critical human rights framework for analyzing feminicide. Will also discuss multiple approaches and collective actions used to address feminicide across Latin America. Event sponsored by the Underrepresented Faculty Mentoring Program in the Provost's Office and co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Latin American and Latino Studies Program, Gender and Women's Studies Program and the Office of the Special Assistant to the Provost on Diversity.

Monday, September 21: Dede Mirabal in Chicago Dede Mirabal will tell the story of her sisters known as the butterflies, whose assassination resulted in the downfall of the Dominican dictator Rafael L. Trujillo. Their heroic struggle is captured in Julia Alvarez's novel 'In the Times of the Butterflies,' which also led the United Nations to designate Nov. 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women." In collaboration with the Jane Addams Hull House Museum, Dominican American Midwest Associatio, Department of Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese and Latino Cultural Center .
*Tuesday, September 22: Storming the Gates: The Entrance of Blacks & Latinos to Higher Education in Illinois Screening of documentary followed by a discussion with a panel of trailblazers. In collaboration with the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Latinos, Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Blacks, Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services, African American Cultural Center and Graduate College Urban Health Program. |

*Monday, September 28: East Meets West: Graduate & Professional Informational Health Sciences Fair An opportunity to learn about educational and career opportunities in the health professions and meet representatives in these fields. Colleges represented include: College of Applied Health Sciences, College of Dentistry, Graduate College, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, School of Public Health. In collaboration with the UIC Urban Health Program and UIC Graduate College Urban Health Program. |

*Monday, October 12: Rosa Nissan's Like a Bride/Like a Mother: A Sephardic-Mexican Family Romance Margarita Saona will discuss Rosa Nissan's novels as examples of a growing interest among Jewish Latin American writers to explore issues of national identity. Brown bag lunch. In collaboration with the Jewish Studies Program. |
*Wednesday, October 14: Eros and Ethos in the Poetry of Gabriela Mistral and Rosario Castellanos Professor Olivia Maciel Edelman will discuss some of the similarities and differences in the work of the first Nobel laureate in Latin America, Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, and renowned Mexican poet and diplomat Rosario Castellanos. In collaboration with the Honors College. |
*Thursday, October 15: Closing Celebration: Viva La Cultura! with UIC Latino Alumni & Friends A culmination of Latino Heritage Month with a live musical performance, tango dancers, food and the company of UIC Latino alumni and friends.
