Ip Man is loosely based on the life of the title character, a grandmaster of Wing Chun martial arts who was Bruce Lee's teacher. The film is set during the 1930s in the martial-arts obsessed town of Foshan. Ip Man lives a quiet domestic life and is reluctant to show off his amazing skills. However, when the Japanese invade and occupy the town in 1937, the modest martial arts master is forced into action.
