Library/IT Assessment Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Library/IT Assessment?
The Library and Information Technology Assessment is a revenue source that will
be dedicated to projects improving library and computing services to UIC students.
Net revenues will be used to upgrade and improve student learning spaces and
technology in all University Library sites and upgrade technology provided by the
Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) including multimedia classrooms.
The net revenues are split 50-50 between Library projects and ACCC projects.
Check the ACCC Web pages for
news
about the computer center's plans for improved
services.
New undergraduate, graduate and professional students enrolling in UIC for the
first time in academic year 2008/09 and beyond will pay this assessment. For
all full-time undergraduate and graduate/professional students for whom the
assessment applies, the fiscal year 2008/09 rate will be $200 per semester; for
students at less than full-time enrollment, the assessment will be pro-rated
according to current tuition range calculations: see
graduate tuition and fees or
undergraduate tuition and fees.
A portion of the revenue collected is set aside for student financial aid.
Why have a Library/IT Assessment?
The Library and Information Technology Assessment is intended to improve the
learning environment for students in the classroom, in the University Library,
and in Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) labs and prepare
students to be competitive in a technologically sophisticated world. The assessment
provides dedicated resources for hardware, software, Web and server applications
in the library and the labs, ergonomic furniture, and learning spaces that enable
group project work and collaboration.
Who approved the Library/IT Assessment?
In recent years, students consistently commented on the lack of comfortable
individual work spaces, adequate computers with production software, and functional
group study rooms in the University Library. In early 2008, the need for dedicated
funds to improve the technology and learning environment on campus was most cogently
articulated. The UIC campus held a town hall meeting, and leadership from the
University Library and ACCC met with student groups during spring 2008 semester
to discuss the needs and anticipated benefits of such an assessment. The
University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved the Library/IT Assessment at
its May 22, 2008 meeting.
Who decides how to spend the revenues from the Library/IT Assessment?
A committee comprised of at least 50% student representatives and with faculty
representation makes recommendations to the Provost each year on what projects
or services should be undertaken with the net revenues from the assessment.
Those serving on the committee for academic year 2008/09 are:
- Mary Case - University Librarian
- Davide Fossati - Graduate Student Council
- Frank Goldberg - Vice Provost for Resource Planning and Management
- Mark Grabiner - Department Head, Kinesiology and Nutrition
- David Hofman - Associate Professor, Physics
- Ahmed Kassem - Vice Provost for Information Technology
- John Katsis - Health Professions Student Council
- Lon Kaufman - Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs
- Irene Klein - Graduate Student Council
- Michael Kravolec - Health Professions Student Council
- Manu Raghavan - Undergraduate Student Government
- James Winters - Student Trustee
What is the plan for improving library collections?
