The library is always dirty and noisy - there's lots of graffiti and sometimes I don't like going because I don't feel safe there. People are always talking, laughing, on their cel phone, moving chairs around, etc. It is not comfortable or inviting and I try to avoid it and do as much research at home as possible. It seems that none of the books I want are on the shelf - they're either listed as stolen or missing, and even when it says they're available, they won't be on the shelf. Going to the library ends up being an all-day event and I leave without the information I needed. It is very frustrating.

The service from staff, especially at the reference desk has been excellent. My biggest two concerns are library hours which are too short especially for a major research institution and the physical internal environment which is not comfortable. I realize that these are budget items.

The level of service varies quite widely. The Reserve Desk (especially ERES) administration is generally excellent; however, the info. desk is highly variable, as is the circulation desk. My biggest complaint, however, is the incredible lack of print resources; my students and I often have to go to other non-UIC sources for materials.

I feel as thought the library should monitor what the computers are being used for because often times when there are students waiting to use the computers for library resources there are students using them to be on social networking sites such as myspace and facebook.

Check out San Diego State's online organization of materials and resources. In some ways it is easier to navigate than UIC's site.

The library is very confusing. They should have all novels on one side and then all science stuff on one side and so on. If i want to read a novel i have to know who the author is but im not always sure if i know the author and i would like to just pick a novel insted for searching who the author is in order to find it.

The only problem I have had with the library is this semester. I checked out a book for a book report for a class and the next day I received and email that I had 3 weeks instead of the 5 when I checked it out. Then, after I retured it, it was on hold for 2 weeks and then put back on the shelf. If I needed this book for a class it would have been nice to have a reasonable amout of time (i never got to read the book) or to kno that the person who requested it never picked it up and that it was available for me if I stil needed it. Needless to say I had to spend tons of time looking for ANOTHER book.

I mostly use the electronic journals and newspapers online.

If possible, major newspapers should be directly accessible. For example, to access the Chicago Tribune, and others, one has to follow a link to the paper's web site, then set-up an individual account. It would be nice to access papers online similar to coming into the library in person and reading the hard copies.

Regarding journals, many of them have several links and the numbers seem to be increasing. It would help if these could be "cleaned up" so that the best of the best are available only. When I am seeking a journal article, I want to read and usually download the article in pdf format. But too often the links take me only to an abstract site and/or a site where they want me to pay or even subscribe. This happens even in cases when other links to the same article enable me to download the pdf file for the entire article free.

Computers need modernization. They are unreliable and slow when they do work. There are also not enough work stations that support Uprint. Staff is always very friendly and willing to help, but the computers are not in their realm of expertise. Let the librarians be librarians and get a worthy system admin to maintain a university level network.

This survey is WAY TOO confusing. I have no idea if my opinions will be correctly assigned to the designated values, and vice versa. I am happy to fill out a survey for the good of the libraries at UIC but I have 2 college degrees and I don't understand what you've put together here.

The personnel has always been helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I've never had a bad experience with anyone on the library staff. I'm often frustrated, however, because books I need for research are already checked out and there aren't additional copies (particularly of faculty-authored books). If I could ask for any change in the library services, it would be more copies of books, or less time allowed for books to be checked out.

The main things I need are journal access and ILL, ie, the ability to access materials not held at UIC. Thus far I've been happy with the speed with which I've been able to obtain ILL materials. The journal selection through UIC is okay but not great. Would be nice if we were given an opportunity to suggest new journals on an annual basis.

Periodicals holdings are slim, and jStor can only fill in so much, especially as there are usually lags between current issues and digitially available ones.

But, I will say that John Cullars is exceptional and helps whenever he can.

Some staff are helpful, some are horrible. Every single time I have asked the reference librarians for help, they have been rude, patronizing, and unhelpful. I am also frustrated that I had ILL'ed several articles that didn't come. Because I failed to make note of the ones I requested, and because there are no email confirmations, I have no idea what those articles were. Super annoying, and a huge waste of time! I love the on-line access to articles, but often find the journals in my area (trauma and violence) are not on-line.

I would like a much quieter place. I would appreciate if at least one floor were reserved only for individual study and if you put a sign on it (someone could stay there to be sure students respect it). In all floors that are place for individual and group study together. That is really bad for those who really want to study. I also would appreciate if you had more books.

The UIC Daley Library is in serious need of remodeling. The red cloth tiles that hang from the ceiling in the main entrance are old, dusty, and need to be replaced. The study tables on the first floor are covered in terrible graffiti and the chairs are dirty and badly worn. Unfortunately the Daley Library is not inviting and is not an environment that inspires and makes students feel at home. The Engineering Library at U of I in Champaign is a great example of a beautiful library that makes students feel like the university cares about them. The U of I Engineering Library is colorful, lets in lots of natural light, and has new computers and comfortable seating and study areas. I love the Daley Library and I use it on a daily basis but I think that is in serious need of remodeling. The library interior has a very ominous feeling to it and the main entrance is very dark and dreary. Please make changes to the library to make it a more inviting and comfortable place to learn and study. Thank you.

The library people appear to be very biased in terms of not helping studednts of color locate resources and they do not let you know how to use the resources. For the amount of money we pay for classes the people that work for the University should remember that attending students pay a portion of their salaries.

This survey was only generated to serve the purpose of the unawareness of its users. The library is jam packed with much useful information and it is important that as students we know how to find it and distinguish information. That is whether it is reliable or not . But for me, it is not about if or how the information presented is there. Information is always there. Yes there have been instances where UIC does not have the foreign films that I need to watch. Or even the call number selected on the screen of the computer is not. It is either that or I cannot find the book within the first floor.

This survey means little or has no relevance at all to my academic pursuits. in needing a quiet space to study. The 3rd floor is no different from the 1st, 2nd, or 4rth. People don't care about talking on the phone. The library aids don't care to be quiet nor do they care to keep the masses quiet when in a designated silent areas.

As always, thanks for including me in this survey. I am glad that I was hand picked or blindly picked.

The library service is very good. The library building is terrible. Because of this, I regularly use the Daley library web resources and check out books, and I appreciate the helpful assistance I receive from the staff. But I never work in the library; if I plan to work (research, reading, writing) in a library, I go to the Newberry or UofChicago's Regenstein.

First, the graffiti on the tables is very distracting and needs to be addressed. That crap should not be tolerated at our university. Secondly, the older model computers are horrible. Keyboards that do not work, mice that are filthy. Thirdly, how often does maintenance make rounds to clean each floor? A mop up, with some decent soap not just dirty recycled mop water, would do wonders for the stuffy smell and dirt trapped corners of the 3rd and 4th floor. Other than that, I love the staff and resources at the library.

I get many journal table of contents alerts. If I click on the link to the article it goes to the journal web site, but I cannot get access to it unless I go through the library website through several pages to get the articles. I would love it if there were some way for us to be able to go directly to the article for journals the library has electronic access to., dirrectly from the table of content alert page.

My interaction with Libray staff has almost always been positve!! The libray offers so many differerent resourses and I do feel that efforts are made by the libary staff to educate both students and facutly of the different services offered such as ref. works, signing up to receive table of contents from different journals etc. I definatly do not take full advantages of all of the services, but I apprecieate that they are provided. What I am not please with is the facility itself. I am speaking specfically of Daley Library. The Daley library is not a comfortable place to study. The elevators are poorly lit and very slow. This combination makes them scarry. The windows are dirty and there are not a lot of outlets for using a laptop, etc.

I depend a great deal on search engines that I finance. These generally would be too expensive to the library or are reserved for professional schools. I have always found the library staff to be terriific and let me say that Steve W. is always interested in my work and very helpful. I am a traditional "bricks and mortor" person who is increasingly dependent on electronic resources for their work. I admit to having little free time and that I could be doing more to develop my skills. I love the way the library is developing and may be asking for too much when I contemplate some departmental based tutorials or even individual sessions with faculty. The book collection in my field is quite decent. In general because of my area of study, I spend enormous amount of time at non-UIC libraries.

The majority of the staff @ Daley Library are wonderful but they must have better equipment and resources so that they can do their job more efficiently. This library is not assessible for anyone in a wheelchair or scooter. We are reduced to a dependence level when we must be dependent on staff to retrieve our requested media. The shelves are too close together and the elevators work sporadically if they are not in service.

Hard to do this in limited space/time. Daly Library's physical space is quite poor; it's a place I generally want to avoid, not work in. (Did you really have to ask that question -- "A comfortable and inviting location

"? Does anyone think it is an inviting location???) Equipment -- particularly computers -- are often not working. Staff is generally find; the acquisition folks are VERY helpful and desirous of improving the collections with their too-limited budgets. (Steve Wiberley, for instance, is a marvel: He understands the work we do, seeks out our insights, and tries --often quite effectively -- to meet our needs. He has made my life as a researcher much better and easier). But one word about this survey: WHO DESIGNED IT and WHY DID YOU PAY FOR IT? It is poorly designed; the questions are confusing and off-target. Whoever approved it doesn't understand her/his "users" in the environment. I had to read the instructions and questions multiple times, in some instances, before I understood what was being asked. Seriously -- do you really think these are the best questions you can ask? Finally, I did not want to answer all the questions, in part because I thought some of them were worded poorly or were silly. Yet after hitting submit, your server woudn't accept my survey because I had left some questions blank. So I want back and filled in answers just so that I could submit the form to you. That too was inconvenient and, probably, conveys poorly my thoughts on some subjects. Perhaps that part of the survey could be fixed -- we can send in only those answers we want. I would be happy to speak with anyone about the survey, the library , or its holdings, if follow-up is desired or more qualitative information is sought. I am Eric Arnesen, Professor of History at UIC, and can be reached by email at arnesen@uic.edu.

The books are old with the exception of the computer books. There are to many books that are older than me on the shelves in the business section. I want to read about the new trends in business, not what was done in 1985 or 1965. I get most of my books from the Chicago public library because their books are more current. I would prefer to get them from UIC.

Because parking near the libraries has deteriorated since I started using them in 1976, I use the library less on weekends.

It became harder to return books. Each library should have a curbside return. In addition, we should have some system to return books by intercampus mail. Or additional book return sites around campus.

- Lighting bad to study in

- Not enough comfortable work areas (good chairs and desks made a world of difference)

- Hours library is open not great for late night studiers (90% of students)

- Library should be clean and needs a fresh coat of paint

- Seats in library are uncomfortable and outdated

I always require new graduate student assistants to get the training for doing literature searches. They have come back with so-so capabilities. The availability of online materials has been steadily improving over the years. However, the resources don't always work. I was doing a search with a new search engine that covers multiple databases. When I called for help, the librarian wasn't immediately able to determine why it didn't work from home. Upon investigation, she emailed me to say that it doesn't work outside of UIC. Information like that should be reflected on your website. Also, it would be great to have everything accessible from outside computers. I find myself trying to prepare papers and lectures from home, and value online resources.

It is very difficult to find any of the books I often need at the Daley library. Almost every time that I go there with their call numbers the books are missing when the library website claims they are available and in their proper location. I would say that out of my six years of work at UIC for undergrad and graduate that I have absolutely no confidence that I will get the books I need at the Daley library even though they are listed as available on the website.

I use the library two or three times a day. I use the webiste half a dozen times a day. I am constantly doing research. When it comes to the regulary use, the library is terrific--the reserve desk folks and the reference librarians like Helen and Anne, especially. However, when it comes to glitches or asking even the smallest question out of the ordinary, the libarians often seem bothered that I'm asking. Are they simply overworked and underpaid? Is there some way to address out-of-the ordinary questions with more patience? If the librarians were just a little more patient, I think it would be the BEST campus library I've ever worked with. Thank you.

I know that there are more resources for on-line searches and electronic journals but I just find it very hard to navigate through the website and determining what database to use or how to use it. I consider myself to be computer savvy but navigating through all of those is frustrating which is why I rely on doing my research by using Google or other search engines before I would attempt to use the library's services - even though I KNOW obtaining your research references is more reliable than getting it off the web.

It never seems like there is enough space to study. Whether I'm by myself or with a group, it is hard to find a quiet place to get work done. People are loud, both employees and patrons; study rooms are almost always full and rarely will the desk worker rent out a room that requires a key, even if all of the rest of the rooms are full. It's disappointing.

I find the library service offered by the librarians to be excellent. They are always exremely helpful. A problem that I have, however, is that as a Medical Sociologist the library does not have the materials I need in terms of books and journals and I always have to get them through inter-library loan. Also, the reduced hours are a problem, particularly the fact that the library closes at 7:00 in the summer, which prevents me from using it.

Reference librarians are no better than I am at finding information or directing me to resources--they check the same database I already consulted and have nothing more to offer. Reference librarians imagine themselves teachers of something they call "information literacy" when in fact they are merely enablers of students' lazy "look this up for me and give me the answers" requests for information I have asked students to unearth for themselves as part of a designed educational experience. Reference librarians are typically mystified when I make sophisticated information requests--I suspect they are unfamiliar with my advanced language and research skills, which renders them unhelpful at best and in worst cases belligerent. In other words, in their current form, they are just-barely adequate responders for undergraduate students (and they err on the side of handing students too much easy information rather than *teaching* them actual literacy *skills*) and useless for advanced scholars who need to step beyond the keyword-search capabilities already built into the uiccat online system. Let's replace them with bigger, faster search computers. leave the proper teaching of school-related skills to the professors, and put them to work getting books back on the shelves faster and with fewer unchecked-in "losses" of books patrons returned on time.

I would like it if the library held inservices on how to use different parts of the library or the library as a whole and where to locate materials. I would also like an inservice on using the library computer system/site. It is all trial and error for me. If they are offered, they need to be advertised well (massmail email, etc) and have some in evenings or weekends for those that take evening classes or off campus can attend.

Sometimes it is hard to get on a computer when there because students are often online playing games or socializing for long periods of time. It makes it hard to look up info needed.

A 44 question survey is way too long from a design standpoint. As a PhD student I am a very frequent library user. It is great to be able to get journal articles electronically. But it is sometimes very hard to get the collections via OCLC. The service times out almost instantly, tells you that you will be charged a fee, and sometimes indicates that there is an article available but you can't actually get it. I have grown to hate OCLC. Then if I try to get this article via interlibrary request, they tell me to use OCLC. It is very annoying.

The other thing is that it is hard to get articles that are more than 10 years old. It would be so nice to be able to access journal articles from the 1970s and 1980s with the same ease as those from the late 1990s onward. Of course some resources like JStor make these available, but not all journals are on JStor.

As a matter of fact JStor is the best online resource as far as I'm concerned. In terms of ability to use, downloading a PDF format, etc. I wish everything were available on JStor.

The other comment I have is that when the staffing was cut from the 3rd floor reference desk, the staff that were actually there would refuse to help you unless you went down to the second floor and got an "escort" to the third floor to help you with a specific request for a non-circulating book. This was a turn-off to many people and I will say that there was one librarian who was a complete snot about this. She would stand right there and ignore people who were just asking for her to hand them a book off a shelf two feet from her, and would make them go to the second floor and get a person down there to go upstairs wtih them. When carrying heavy books, bags, etc. this is completely rude and uncalled for behavior. Thankfully I think this policy has changed but it did drive me away for a while.

Last but not least it is would be less inconvenient for them to close the east entrance than the west if they HAVE to close one of them. At least for people who want to drive and drop off a book.

1. Library web pages can occasionally be confusing - too many non-essential links - but are generally good.

2. Library staff needs to be more helpful with electronic reference software (EndNote, etc.). These are increasingly essential to efficiency, but library staff all seem to be untrained on them, so cannot provide help / info.

3. Library recently moved PsychInfo out of the OVID system: this is a real mistake. When Psych was in OVID it was easy to do simultaneous searches with Medline (a key intersection in modern Psychology and, I suspect, Social Science generally), but now this requires not only separate searches, but the use of separate search services. A real step backward!!!

Overall, I appreciate the library and its staff very much. So far I've only had one slightly negative experience, so that rates our people pretty high in my book. My specialization is underrepresented on campus, and as a result in the library, but the I-Share system helps make up for that lack, along with out EXCELLENT AND HELPFUL ILL staff for whom I have the utmost appreciation. The Electronic Resources are very good and very helpful. The physical part of the building leaves much to be desired, some of which can not be helped because of the architecture. But some things could be done to create quiet reading areas that are inviting as well as private spaces.

My biggest gripe about the library is 3-fold- fix these, and the place would be perfect.

#1) Library of Health Sciences in CHICAGO is FILTHY! Make it cleaner- change the carpet, clean up the bathrooms, hire a cleaning staff... make it warmer and more inviting - RUSH'S Health Science Library is actually the one I prefer to study at since it's so much more comfortable, even though it's smaller.

2) ADD MORE ROOMS FOR GROUP STUDY! The best place to study in the Health Science Library in Chicago are the group rooms in the basement. I usually go down there with 3 or 4 people and study. Unfortunately, it seems like whenever I need a room, there are never enough for everyone. It would be nice if you guys could add more, or maybe have the basement partitioned off into group rooms. Again- the place really needs a good cleaning / re-decoration.

3) The computers NEED TO BE CHANGED (in the Library of Health Sciences in Chicago). For starters, they SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT take more than a couple of seconds to start up... but they actually have a sign on the computers warning all users that startup will take at least 1 full minute... and it's really closer to 2 minutes. It should NEVER take that long to set up a stable network connection. Secondly, they should add some functionality to those computers- at a minimum, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Reader, some access to network drives. Unfortunately, all of the library computers ONLY have bare minimum internet capabilities and Adobe Reader, NOT office suite, and NOT network drive access. This would make the computers more robust.

Those are my 3 recommendations. If nothing else, at least CLEAN THE DAMN PLACE UP AND UPDATE THE DECOR. THAT"S THE NUMBER 1 GRIPE OF EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN MY CLASS WHO ACTUALLY USES THE HEALTH SCIENCE LIBRARY. TAKE A LOOK AT RUSH'S LIBRARY- IT'S SO MUCH NICER TO STUDY / WORK IN. However- kudos to the UIC Library staff for the INCREDIBLE online journal / ovid / pubmed collections- they are the best I have EVER used, and a real lifesaver!!

Most employees have been wonderful--keep up the good work. I would really like the see the library support better integration with research tools like EndNote (such as the ability to search the library's subscription databases in the program).

The quiet study areas are not quiet. The library staff needs to enforce the rules concerning noise, food, drinks, and especially cell phone use. It is the worst problem with the library. Group/discussion areas seperated from quiet study, enforcement of rules, and a larger ACCC lab.

I'm very happy with the library srvice. I primarily use the online resources and download the articles I need first. Next step, if not available online, is to get the print edition from the library. After that, I do an interlibrary loan. Some papers are just to rare to get.

Need newer, more modern computers that use current technology, like Mac OS X (no one in our professions use outdated Windows anymore). Also, an easier website that is user-friendly (more buttons with choices to navigate and search engines), more acess from home and office (I never have time to go to the library- ever).

The virtual library is really great, though navigation can be confusing, the information available is useful. When I need a book, though, almost invariably it isn't there. Inter-Library loan is a lifesaver--the right books always inlcude a wait, though. The staff is always helpful. The environment is abysmal--it's stuffy, uncomfortable, ugly, and unwelcoming to spend any amount of time in beyond getting the resources I need and leaving.

My main concern with the library is not the staff itself (they are usually knowledgeable and helpful) but physical/structural problems. It's difficult for staff to help people because they are so short staffed. The computers themselves are not only outdated, but too often very few computers are working at all (I can spend a lot of time running around looking for a computer to use!). The library itself is uninviting and uncomfortable. It's hard to find a quiet, calm space to study in, the chairs are hard to sit in for a long time, and it's simply not pleasant to work there. In terms of materials, books are often missing or shelved in the wrong place.

Hi, Thanks for taking this survey, I hope that it will help us all improve our library. I had a couple of suggestions. I am never able to access university subscribed documents on the internet (like IEEE Xplore) using the UIC off-campus resource access methods. I think it is very important for students and faculty alike and should always be working. Also, it is possible to expand the books collection in Engineering, I dont find many good books in the library.

Thanks.

The library staff do a wonderful job of getting the information I ask for and are always helpful. However, the library facility is less than adequate. The decor is very dated and there are not areas for students to spread out and study comfortably. The furniture is not comfortable at all. There are only 2 rooms with doors for group work. The computers are often slow. I would like to be able to access the internet from my laptop within the school. I am unable to do this for group work and class at this time and this is very inconvenient.

It would be better if the employees were more in tune to the overall objective of providing a place of resources and studying. I once saw an employee ask a person to stop talking on their cell phone when six feet from them was a group of students talking louder than the cell phone user, this did not make sense to me. Employees often have normal volume conversations while walking through quiet study areas. The lady in the science library in ses has fingernails so long that she can not seem to effectively perform her duties with any efficiency, she is too worried about breaking off the remaining nails. Finally the older employee with long blonde hair and large glasses should not be allowed to have keys dangling on her side as she is pushing book carts through study areas.

The LHS is probably the worst library I've ever used (if it can even be termed a "library"). There are few INDIVIDUAL/ISOLATED areas for study. The staff are extremely loud in working, greeting each other, eating, moving...you name it and they are loud while doing it.

The study carrols are so uncomfortable that you have to take analgesics to sit in them for more than 10 minutes and they are all so close together that it is hard to concentrated while being breathed on by you neighbor.

The bathrooms in the LHS are disgusting, the study rooms are loud (you can hear the people in the group study rooms from about 50 feet away). The constant drip of water into numerous garbage cans scattered throughout the basement can get very aggrevating around finals week.

And lastly, the hours are horrible. They need to be extended until at least 9 pm normally and they need special extended hours for finals/midterms weeks.

I am a medical student here at UIC. My tuition is over $50,000 per year, yet I find that the dingy public libraries, shared with the homelell and uneducated are much more accomodating and condusive to good study.

I am one of the FEW medical students that actually uses the library, but I am constantly looking for better places because it is so terrible. PLEASE FIX IT!!!!

Good: The staff is very, very nice they are very discrete they don't bother students are very supportive they go about their business don't overpower students with crazy rules. On the other hand it sems that the library staff is technologically impaired.Any kind of computer or printer problem is like the end of the world somehing like sound on the computer. They should hire at least one person on staff who is computer efficient besides searching. This person must be available at all times . It takes so long to resolve any technological problem. Also they should have a station with a person who can physically get up from the chair and go up to the floor and show you how to find things.Being in medical sciences I have very little time for this If someone would show me at least once I would not have trouble any more. No, they explain to you and leave you confused and stay in the chair and go back to reading their own book. Also, the lower level should have more couches because is not as hot there than in level 3. The heating is ridicously high on the upper levels. The complaints are not resolved. I made a complaint about the lack of sign if the computer has audio capabilities. I had to waist large amount of time the day before exam to go to every computer with head phones to see if I can listen to the lecture from the internet. No one knew from the staff which computer had the audio an. To this time there is no sign. So the next student has to go through the same thing.I will pursue the issue higher I will talk to my college about it too. Also keep in mind that students come to library mainly after classes. The most quilified support staff should have evening shifts. If you don't know anything about technology and don't feel like helping students(physically) to find books stay in the morning shift.

Access to journals on-line is incredibly important for my work. I was initially disappointed when I came here at how poor our on-line collection is in biological and clinical medicine. We didn't have access to many top notch journals. It seemed archaic to go to the library and photocopy articles from current issues of journals. But over the past year that has changed. I really appreciate the efforts of Deborah Blecic who I've contacted about our on-line subscriptions. We now have access to many more of the journals I need. So I can see significant improvement of the past year. Keep it up.

Sometimes journals are listed as on-site in UICCAT and they are missing. That can be a bit frustrating. For the most part, I have been pleased with the online services. It would be helpful if services were available for students that are out of the state (for data collection, etc. ) so that they could access print journals. Students don't always have access to those journals at nearby universities.

I was transfering from another university. Compared to previous university I attended, I think the library facility of UIC is very poor (but, human service is OK). Rather than survey, I would recommend you directly visit libraries of other universities. Uncleaned windows, gloomy internal mood, and old-fashioned facilties made it difficult for me to visit the UIC library.

We have a brand-new sports facility, which is much more advanced than that of other universities. But why is the library poor, though this is a research university?

When I visited other universities, I usually visit the main libraries on campus. UIC library is the worst among the libraries that I ever visited.

Many universities invest much money in their library functions, but I don' t believe UIC interests in the improvement of library environment for students.

In a nutshell, I think the library human service is good, but the facility is very poor.

Richard Daley library does not have an adequate selection of reading materials for my classes. Also, if I was able to actually find relevent materials using the confusing online catalog, the books are missing. I would say 4 out of 5 books would not be there. I am very familiar with my home library and how to find books in one. This library makes my acedemic career more difficult with its lack of organization and materials, people unwilling to help, uncomfortable atmosphere, lack of new materials and wealth of out dated, crusty books. I went home a few times to find books at another library, and that is unfortunate. UIC should have an excellent library with all of the serious and driven students it has.

The problem with our library is mainly the hours. The majority of large campuses have their library hours at least until midnight, and 24 hours during finals. I think that the 9 p.m. closing time on weekdays is unacceptable. Students that work and are involved in extra curricular activities are unable to use the library. I think that maybe leaving the first and second floors open later would be a good start.

Electronic Access to current Journal articles (not after a 6 or 12 month embargo) is the single most important service the Library can offer to me and colleagues in my department.

I have more than once had the experience of reserving a video for a class, coming to pick it up, only to find that it has been checked out to someone else. This is unacceptable. Books are often missing from the shelves when the computer says they are available. In general, although I think the library has a good collection, I find that the staff are not at all well trained and there is generally a real lack of professionalism. In addition, the library is often loud, with students speaking at full volume and using their cell phones. Many of the study carrolls are full of racist graffiti. It's disheartening because it could be a wonderful place to study. As it is, the sooner I can get my books and get out, the better.

The only issues that I've run into have concerned electronic problems. The keyboards are old and out-of-date. A lot of the time, I have to find words and "copy and paste" them into the search bar because the keys don't work. The other problem took place on the 3rd floor printer, which only takes paper from one tray. I wanted to print something very quickly and leave for class, but was late because I had to wait for someone to come and fill the paper.

Thank you for your time.

getting access to more online journals in hispanic studies would be great

it would also be nice to be able to get an article electronically from I-share (like with ILL) rather than being required to order the journal and then photocopy it

I think library usage would be increased if the library underwent some cosmetic changes. I find the space too dark and depressing. There are not enough comfortable areas in which to sit and read. Plenty of empty study cubes and tables, but that is most likely due to the fact that it is a depressing place to study. Consider making it more user friendly with respect to comfort of users. why not a borders or starbucks area where library users can get comfortable, study and socialize. conceptually, the environment is very dated and has an older 60's or 70's approach to service. might as well change now, b/c obviously at some point you will change.

I think the library is one of the only places on campus where students can study quietly while not having social gatherings distracting them from work or study. However, that being said, a warmer, more comfortable atmosphere (i.e. couches, more comfy seats and desks) where students can feel "at home" without the distractions of being home. The "wall" desks and carved grafitti are not only distracting, they're ugly. That's really all I have to say about that.

Electronic journals and resources are extremely useful to me, few areas of improvement may be to make older resources available electronically. This may be beyond the library's ability. I also would like to see group rooms that are are friendly, open during late hours, and include resources such as whiteboards, chalkboards, and multimedia. Thank-you.

New, ergonomic furniture (tables, chairs, study carrels, couches, lamps) are desperately needed. The 1970s furniture is worn-out. More study spaces are needed. Longer hours. A parking lot. A new building.

The library is very useful in helping me to get the information I need. However, the Daley library, which I frequent the most, is not very inviting. It seems very old and could use some new paint and maybe some tables and chairs. Brighter colors would make it more inviting and a more comfortable atmosphere.

I do not go to the library often, but I do use the library web site to find articles. I do find it a little hard to find things I need because there is a lot the library has to offers. :).

We did have 2 librarians come in to help our research class navigate through the databases to find articles more efficiently. I would like it if we were also taught how to check the trustworthiness of the articles too.

The service could definitely be better. Just like everywhere else at UIC, it feels like the students don't really matter. On top of the service, the library is a disgusting place to do work. The desks on the first floor are embarassing. Half of the computers are broken in the library. An elevator is broken. Everything is filthy. Are there even janitors that work on campus? This is my first year at UIC and I am extremely disgusted with the appearance of the campus. So many places are filthy and behind in technology. And if a student tries to say something, it seems like our opinions don't matter. I, among many of my friends feel this way and it would be nice if something could be done about it. Where are our tuition and fees going?

LHS Chicago could use nicer facilities (new carpeting, new study desks), but I guess if it's between newer facilities and newer books, maybe newer books is more important. Overall, I am extremely happy with the books that the library has available in my field and the service that I have received in the library. The public computers could be faster. Also I am happy with the electronic journals that are available through the library.

Quiet study spaces and helpful staff are important concerns for Library users. Some patrons indicate that they do not always get the answer they need from staff in the Library. And when a user finds a person who gives them personal attention and the information they require, then they will seek that person out for every problem they experience, regardless of whether or not it relates to that person’s specific job. Given that library facilities are deteriorating, we must continue to provide a high level of service for our users. However, this message must be relayed to all units, not just those in public service because all the work of staff in all departments affects the patron’s Library experience. Those who work behind the scenes are not always made aware of the significance of their contribution and how their work impacts the users.

The service I have recieved is at the library is generally very good. The resource librarians are incredibily helpful and patient. When asked questions, most staff members are courteous. I have had problems with circulation sometimes not accounting for my book returns. Even though I like how long we are allowed to check out books, it is sometimes inconvienent to have to ask for a book you need to be called back when you need it at that point in time. I suggest shorter periods for book checkouts. I often use Loyola Univ. Library because the books I need often need to be called back for. Although I prefer to study at libraries, I don't study at the Daley (my school's library) because it is not very inviting.

1) The library isn't inviting at all - terrible environment.

2) Library hours is soooooo not accessible for doc. student like us, who might need to work till the wee hours, or some of my friend prefer to be here early in the morning like 4ish.

3) the so-called study room for doc. student isn't fully enclosed. i need some music (classical) while i do my reading but i can't therefore i have to give up using the study room. Oh, and the wireless connection in the room is soooooooooooo bad. I have the latest wireless card yet, the signal is BAD!!

4) it might not be a bad idea to have a list of contact person, on the lib website so that i, in the edu field know who to contact and so on. maybe have an email that goes, edu@lib.uic.edu, then for engineering - engin@uic.edu, so on.

thanks, and i guess by the time when things are improved, i am out of here!!! hahaa...anyway, please try to improve this place. thanks for the effort.

One aspect of the library attention that needs great attention is the noise level on the fourth floor of the Daley location (and other study areas). A majority of students treat this as a social gathering spot, speak at regular volumes, and use mobile phones freely. A better study environment should be developed so that students needing quiet study space can utilize the library. Most colleagues of mine say they would go to the library to study but just cannot get anything done there due to noise levels. This is my biggest concern about the library and has been since I started attending the university.

In general I have minimal interaction with the library staff beyond requesting electronic access to published journals online or texts at other libraries. Though I do visit the library on occasion (1-2/year), I would prefer some electronic copier rather than the current 10 or 25 cent copier especially if one could then email copies directly to ones own email or save directly to disk. I do use the library daily for access to scientific journals though I would appreciate a more orderly website. Better hours and environment would be good for general studying, but the remote accessability is my strongest concern. Thanks.

My frequent interlibrary loan requests are always addressed promptly. I've been very pleased with the turnaround time. This is critical because our access to electronic journals is not as expansive as I would like, and occasionally my clinical decisions may depend on information in journals to which the library does not subscribe.

Thorough lit searches are challenging. Would like to see a resource to actually do the search, as they have the expertise and what areas might yield more information. I would be willing to pay for such a service. It would be worth it to know that a true, thorough search had been conducted on my topic of interest for my dissertation. Loyola provides this service free to students. You can make an appointment, speak with a librarian who spends time with you to determine exactly, exactly what your research topic is, and then does an extremely thorough search for you. They search all areas you request (philosophy, sociology, economic impact, , etc) for a nursing paper!! I felt very comfortable that I had any reference out there pertaining to my topic. I do not have a Master's in Library Science, and i sometimes feel you need one to marticulate the whole computer search system. As I said before, I would certainly be willing to pay for such a service to know I had a thorough, proper search done for my dissertation. The staff are very nice, and helpful, but the problem is they show you "a few tricks" and then you are on your own. Since my computer skills are definitely lacking, I feel my searches are inadequate. also, weekends, when I do most of my work in the library since I work full time has limited staff with limited knowledge. Monday through Friday is when you will find the resources people you need. Could a resource person not work at least part of a Saturday on a trial basis?

i was concerned the last time I was in the library. It was very busy, which is a good thing! I needed to locate a resource through the computers. All of them were taken - which is good, I'm glad students use the library - except that three students were using the library computers to look at very suggestive pictures of women. Now, I don't want to be judgmental, but when I have only 1 hour to find a source and others are looking at pictures....someone should walk around and check out what is going on, especially when the library is so busy....

I would appreciate computer laboratories with ergonomic equipment in a ratio of one- for every 15 pc's availble at UIC /ergonmic keyboards& mouses, Mouse more important to curvature of hand.

I would also appreciate more updated VHS/CD movies available for History and English subjects similiar to the Harold Washington Public Library Downtown, they have tapes, cassettes, movies of plays which enhance my learning dramatic elements in the speech in plays and idioms of Early Elizabethan prose (for example).

I would also greatly appreciate more, much more light in our library and comfortable corner settings including sofas and chairs, similiar to other areas around the campus that the Arts and Architecture students have decorated in SH & BH, DH etc.,. This creates a softer more relaxed atmosphere to study as if you were at home but with the luxury of quietness that facilitates concentration on campus.

In my opinion the library staff are some of the most dedicated professionals on campus and are a great resource for me when I need to find more information to pursue my subject in depth. They are knowlegeable, pleasant and keen to help students always.

I think that the library should have much longer hours than they currently have. Students should be able to access the library as a place to study, read, and research almost any time of the day.

There are a few notable ommissions in the database of electronic journals, including the journal of applied social psychology.

I would appreciate email reminders just before books are due back.

I would also find it helpful if the library had a supply of strudy bags for when I have to check out multiple books.

Finally, it would be useful if grad students could allow undergrad assistants to check books out for them in the same way faculty can give that privelage to undergrad/grad students.

The library atmosphere at LHS chicago is terrible. It is NOT an inviting place to study. I most often used the Depaul and/or Loyola libraries during my most intense studying periods. It is embarrassing how poorly maintained our library is. On the other hand, making online services available at home is a strength of the library.

The library needs to be cleaner, it's very dusty, and some of the tables and chairs are just plain disgusting. Also, the tables need to be higher to accommodate people in wheelchairs.

The library staff always seems pleasant and willing to help with everything. It seems that many of the math and science book stacks are out of date, and are usually not helpful. It also doesn't seem that any of the texts used in my classes are available (carried by the library). Also, does the library ever replace stolen books? I did a research paper last semester and there were books I could have used that had been reported missin 3+ years ago. The library could use a facelift with more inviting environments and less dust.

I am off-site, and access through the web exclusively. Staff have been helpful and courteous whenever I have called. Web access to full-text journals could be easier/clearer (often takes me a while to figure out how to get to what I need), and my one attempt to access full-text articles that were not available on-line was a failure. Thanks for all your help!

The people who work at the library are, generally speaking, pretty wonderful - especially the Reference Librarians. I wish the collections were better, but I can generally get what I need as long as I have time to request materials from other libraries.

The Rockford library could use an update on furniture, make it more comfortable to study there.

Frustrating to use PubMed when you don't automatically get the full article and have to look it up somewhere else.

while the online materials are satisfactory, a lot can be changed about the library atmosphere. It is not conducive to studying as it appears old, run down and uncomfortable. Maybe new lighting and furniture would help. Also I have heard quite a few stories of rude library personal...talking loudly, distracting students studying and later reprimanding students for not following the rules. I would love to see a more modern library. I would probably use the library a lot more if there were some major changes made.

In the past I've had good experiences with interlibrary loan, done by a human being and done by me over the computer. Most recently, the computer way didn't seem to work and the human being I spoke to could not help. Now I don't feel this is a useable service. Very important!!!

The library is nasty. Stupid students are always talking on their cell phones in almost all the study areas. Then in the quiet study areas people have conversations with the people around them about non-academic things. Also, I have sat down at many desks to find piles of crumbs because the library staff allows people to eat in the library. Outside of those complaints I think the library is a great place to do research and get work done.

Sometimes it's hard to find the book that I want using the keyword search. Also, it would help if the description of what's in a book was a little longer and detailed. I find myself writing down a bunch of call numbers for books that I think are on the topic I want but I'm not sure because I can't tell from the description. This leads me to spending more time looking for a book than finding one, checking it out, and reading it.

I am always impressed with how quickly my requested items are put on hold and available for pick up. I am on campus only one day a week for only a few hours, I can do all my resarch off-site, place requests, and receive the materials I need all while spending less than five minutes at the checkout desk.

the current status of the daley library is pathetic. it has out dated computers, furniture, books overall the general feeling i get when i use the library is that of a old worn out museum. i would like to see the current daley library on the east campus torn down and built from the groud up, but that is highly unlikely. therefore, the few thing that must be done to expand the service of the library to other/new students is most importantly replacing current furniture with new ergonomical tables and chairs, providing computers that actually work (the apple computers on the 3rd or 4th freezup and have problems just operating), adding new books to the library perhaps replacing the old worn out books with some new editions ( i have once rented King Coal by Upton Sinclair circa 1906 with pages that resembled cardboard), the last and most important service that the library should overhaul is the current library web site and especially the search feature. i am so fed up with irrelevant book titles ending up in my search that i find it easier to just look them up on amazon or google and buy them. i feel sorry for the daley library and fully understand majority of students who don't use its services. it will be no suprise when the library is turned into just another gym but why shouldn't it if the library can't provide the students with publications and quiet environment in a comfortable and efficient way.

I like it that I can always find a place or corner where I can study.

Sometimes I like the desks with taller walls so that you have some privacy and that everyone does not see, too bad there is lots of vandalism on some. Exterior windows may need to be washed (upper floors).

Overall I am very satisfied with the library services, however I and some of my classmates have discussed that the library hours are not conducive to people who have to study late. Closing hours of 9:00 p.m. is early compared to our prior college experience on other campuses. Our evening classes end at 8:20 and that leaves only 40 minutes of library time. I would suggest that at least a couple days or one day a week the library stay open unitl 11p.m. or midnight.

I have never been happy with the ability of the librarians to teach search strategies to my students. There is no organization to their lectures, and they don't use the background information that I have provided about my discipline. Consequently, I have simply done this myself, and with better results (according to students). This is very unfortunate, because it means that the students do not establish a connection with a person at the library. From my perspective, one of the most helpful things that the library could do is provide some CE to the librarians about how to teach so that they can convey their knowledge to others in a meaningful way.

I don' t like using the Daley Library because I cannot access power point presentations on the computers. This makes accessing information that I need difficult. Also, the hours are terrible. When classes start at 8 AM I expect a campus library to open at 7 AM at least. Only one computer lab opens before 8 AM and that is just unacceptable. Also the atmosphere is very uninviting, so its hard to study at Daley.
