Circulation Department: Richard J. Daley Library: UIC University Library

Daley Circulation Department
Reserves: resources available at the Reserve Desk

Library Group Study Rooms
The Reserve Desk schedules six group study rooms in the Daley Library for use by UIC faculty, students, and staff in groups of four or more. Three of these rooms are located at the south end of the first floor, one is on the southeast side of the second floor, and two are located on the northeast corner of the fourth floor. They may be reserved no more than one day in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. Rooms may be reserved for one-hour blocks, not exceeding two hours at one time. Rooms that are unclaimed 15 minutes after the requested time may be reassigned.

Reservations are not accepted on a standing basis, (e.g., 2:00 p.m. every Wednesday). Each time must be requested as indicated above. Group Study Rooms are not transferable and must be used only by the person(s) making the reservation. Trading rooms could result in termination of scheduling privileges.

Additional group study rooms on the south end of the 4th floor are available without reservation.

Groups using the rooms should leave them in satisfactory condition. Keys are not to leave the building and must be returned promptly. A $20.00 fine will be assessed for overdue keys.

The following activities are prohibited in group study rooms:

  • Collection of money for any purpose

  • Consumption of food or beverages

  • Smoking

  • Noise, disorder, or disturbing other patrons

  • Interference with library functions

  • Use of cell phones and other electronic devices that ring or generate audible noise.

The Library reserves the right to deny reservations for a room or to remove any group not conforming to regulations and guidelines. Consumption of food or beverages or the presence of open food or beverages will result in immediate termination of room use by all occupants.

Contact the Daley Library Reserve Desk at 312.996.2719 for Group Study Room reservations.

Wireless Laptop Computers
Laptop computers are available for use in the Daley Library. Users must present a valid UIC i-card and complete a laptop request form to check out a wireless laptop from the Reserve Desk for a 2-hour loan period.

Each machine comes equipped with MS Office XP software (including Excel and Word) and Internet Explorer. Laptops have CD-ROM/DVD-ROM and roam capabilities. The roam capability allows use of the wireless network Internet connection throughout the entire building.

Important Information for the Users of UIC Laptops

  • Use the laptop in the library ONLY.

  • Keep the laptop with you at all times. Do not leave it or the accompanying accessories unattended.

  • Connection to the Internet is available on all floors of the Library.

  • Files cannot be downloaded or saved on the hard drive. All personal files must be saved on floppy disks.

  • Bring earphones to use with the CD/DVD drive.

  • Laptops can be plugged into an electrical outlet or used with the battery. The battery lasts approximately two hours.

Users having trouble with a laptop should return it to the Reserve Desk. Staff cannot assist with laptop technical problems; however, if another laptop is available, a replacement will be issued. Renewals are granted if there is NOT a high demand. Tampering with the laptop may lead to the cost of replacement (approximately $3,000.00).

For assistance using library resources, ask a librarian at the Reference Desk located on the second floor. However, Reference staff cannot assist with laptop technical problems.

For more information contact the Reserve Desk at (312) 996-2719 or via e-mail.

Audiovisual Collection

VHS tapes, DVDs, and CDs are housed at the Daley Library Reserve Desk. All audiovisual titles may be searched via UICCAT, the Library’s online catalog. Instructions for searching audiovisual titles are available in PDF format. (Get Adobe Reader)

Users with current i-cards may check out audiovisual materials from the Daley Library Reserve Desk for three consecutive days without renewal. A fine of $5 per day to a maximum of $25 is assessed for all overdue audiovisual materials. Additional fines and fees may also apply.

Listening, Viewing and Scanning Stations

The Reserve Desk provides four audio-visual and two scanning stations in the Daley Library Reserve Media Room for use by UIC faculty, students, and staff with valid i-cards. They may be reserved no more than one day in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. The stations may be scheduled for two hours although users may request additional time as needed. Reservations that are unclaimed 15 minutes after the requested time may be reassigned.

Reservations are not accepted on a standing basis, (e.g., 2:00 p.m. every Wednesday). Each time must be requested as indicated above. Reservations are not transferable. Scanning stations may be used only by the person making the reservation. Trading time slots or stations could result in termination of scheduling privileges.

Persons using the equipment must leave it in satisfactory condition. Fines and fees may be assessed for damage to equipment not caused through normal use.

The Library reserves the right to deny reservations for the stations or to remove any patron who does not conform to regulations and guidelines. The use of cellular phones or the presence of open food or beverages will result in immediate termination of use privileges by the occupant.

For more information contact the Reserve Desk at (312) 996-2719.
