ScenariosFred Freshman lives in the UIC residence halls, where he keeps his own computer in his room and has an Ethernet connection via Res-Net. He has an ACCC account on Icarus for his email and 10 MB of personal web space. Fred uses P2P software to download new music and movies. He tries not to exceed the 2 MB per 24 hrs. limitation on downloading by ACCC, but is not exactly sure what is the policy on file sharing. Sally Sophomore majors in computer science. She needs some software programs, but her finances are inadequate to afford them. A friend recently offered her a copy of a commercial software application. How does she know if this is a violation? What are the consequences if she is caught? Can she avoid the risk by purchasing affordable software? Gregory Grad-Student teaches a discussion section. Can he photocopy an article for his class or put the article on reserve, without risk of violating copyright? Prof. Jones, in the course of instructing students, has developed some course materials that he would like to protect. Does he have ownership rights? How may he proceed?
