| The
Government Documents, Maps, and Microforms Department is
responsible for several collections and services that cover a
wide array of subject areas and formats. The Daley Library is
a depository for publications from the United States
Government and the State of Illinois. Depository
status ensures receipt of the majority of important documents,
though not all.
The Library subscribes to publications of several
international agencies and selectively purchases publications
of other states and nations. Some of these Government
publications are integrated into the general collections, but
the greatest number of U.S. Federal Documents, Illinois State,
and many city of Chicago publications (as well as selected
number of publications from other local governments in the
Chicago metropolitan region.) The Department's Map Section
supports the basic research and instructional needs of UIC by
making accessible a cartographic materials collection of over
172,000 maps, 1,200 atlases, 4,000 aerial photographs, and a
small collection of map-related reference books. The
Microforms Section houses over 1 million publications in
microform. These include newspapers, journals, government
documents, maps, annual reports of companies, United Nations
documents, ERIC Documents, and special sets.
The Department has
developed, and participates in, a number of significant
community service initiatives including the US Department of
State Foreign Affairs Network (DOSFAN),
the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) system, and an
initiative to provide public access to Department of Energy (DOE)
information in the
DOE Reading Room in the Main Library.
In addition, the Department is dedicated to its traditional
role of providing public access and instruction in the use of
all its collections, as well as collections in the Main
Library, through general and specialized reference service on
the 2nd floor, assistance in the use of electronic resources,
the UIC online catalog,
UICCAT, and
other library systems, and through formal instruction
sessions and seminars. The Department has three public service desks:
The Main Library Electronic Text & Data Center, and CD ROM LAN workstations are also housed in the Government Documents Section.
