Health Information Resources
There is a vast amount of information available at all levels of government
in the areas of health and health care. The UIC collection includes
publications from the federal, state, and city governments. The following
is a list of sources to consult when performing research in the areas of
health and health care. For more information on health policy, please

Statistical Indexes
- 1. American Statistics Index (ASI).
- Location: Microforms, Main Library
- ASI is the only comprehensive index to U.S. government statistical
publications. The subject areas covered by ASI come from the publications
of all federal agencies. The index gives citations to abstracts of the
publications in an abstract volume. The abstracts include title,
author/agency, description of the publication, call number, and ASI fiche
number. If a particular publication in not available in the documents
depository collection, it can be found in the ASI fiche set that accompanies
the index.
- 2. Statistical Reference Index (SRI)
- Location: Microforms, Main Library
- SRI covers state and private organization statistical publications.
It functions like ASI and a fiche set to accompany the index is located in the
documents microfiche collection.
- 3. International Statistics Index (IIS)
- Location: Microforms, Main Library

IIS covers international statistical publications and functions like ASI and
SRI. There is also a fiche set to accompany IIS in the documents
microfiche collection.
- 4. Vital Statistics of the United States
- Location: Documents, Aisle R10

This set covers mortality and natality statistical information. The most
recent set is from 1988.
- 5. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

MMWR gives up-to-date statistical information on deaths in the U.S. Both
text and tables are included in this weekly publication.
- 6. Surveillance Summaries
- Location: Documents, HE 20. 7009/2:

The CDC publishes these summaries on the growth and decline of diseases.
They contain both text and statistical information.
- 7. Vital Statistics: Illinois
- Location: Illinois Documents, PH 8.12:

The Department of Public Health publishes the yearly volume of vital
statistics for the state. Latest year is kept at the Documents Reference Desk.
- 8. Mental Health Statistics
- Location: Illinois Documents, MH 1.18:

Statistics on mental health for state, counties, and smaller geographical
areas by type of illness.
- 9. Aids/HIV Surveillance Report

The Department of Public Health publishes statistics on Aids/HIV at the state
level and reports current events in the area at the national level.
- 10. Community Area Health Inventory

Chicago Department of Health publication that contains statistics on health
issues by gender, race, and community area. Earlier years can be found under

This publication covers the Aids situation in the city and contains statistics
on gender, race, and number of cases by area in Chicago.

These reports are on various topics. For example, there is a report on
cancer by community area in Chicago and one for the state, as well as reports

This research oriented journal is filled with sometimes highly technical

Catalogs and Guides
- 20. Monthly Catalog

MoCat is a catalog of U.S. Government publications. It is the most
comprehensive catalog that exists. The subject, name, author/agency indexes
give citations to abstracts of publications. The abstracts include title of
the publication, author/agency, description of the publication, and call
number.
