About
The UIC Library’s Map Section is a part of the Government Documents, Maps and Microforms Department. The Map Section acquires, catalogs and maintains its collection to make the cartographic materials available to both the general public and UIC affiliated members. The collection includes mostly recent maps, charts, aerial photographs, atlases and electronic spatial information which is acquired mostly through the Federal Depository Library System. Some other cartographic materials are also available from the Richard J. Daley Library's Special Collections (mostly maps/atlases published prior to 1900 - for example, old maps of Chicago area, including the original paper Sanborn Fire Insurance maps) and from the microform section of the Government Documents, maps and Microforms Department (Sanborn Maps of Illinois and other areas & building permits in the microfilm format.) For more information on our collection and services, please send us email at lib-maps@uic.edu.

Background
The UIC Library’s map collection dates back to 1957 when the campus was the University of Illinois’ Chicago Undergraduate Division (UI-CUD) located at Navy Pier. Its core collections were: the post WWII, AMS depository map collections and depository status transferred from the Newberry Library (maps of foreign areas), the USGS map depository status transferred from the Western Society of Engineers (current maps of the United States), duplicate non-depository maps transferred from the UIUC Geography and Map Library (maps of foreign areas acquired by UIUC Map and Geography Library through its participation in the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division’s summer map program) and the earlier editions of USGS depository maps transferred from the Newberry Library to the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (UICC) in 1973.The Map Section was a unit within the Special Collections Department until October 1980 and then was transferred to the Documents Department.

Collection
The collection is the largest of its type available at a public university in the Chicago area. The scope of the collection is worldwide, with a focus on the Chicago Metropolitan region, which includes six northeastern Illinois counties. Due to the Map Collection’s history, the collection is considered as relatively new. The cartographic materials included in the Map Section are composed primarily of sheet maps and atlases; however, aerial photographs, paper prints of remote sensing imagery, digital geospatial data, relief maps and globes are also collected.

The cartographic reference collection includes specialized reference tools such as gazetteers, cartobibliographies, periodicals, and government publications that related to cartographic materials and map librarianship. Additional resources are available through government and private websites. These tools aid the Map Section Staff both in service to patrons and in performing their daily work.

Location
The Map Section is located on the third floor in the Richard J. Daley Library on the UIC East Campus in Chicago, Illinois. UIC campus maps are located on the UIC web site. Information on directions and parking locations are also available from the web site. Patrons are advised to use mass transit systems (see directions ), as on-street parking is extremely limited and difficult to find. Please contact the UIC Parking Services Customer Service Office at (312) 413-9020 for more information about parking at UIC.
