Access to Cartographic Materials

The Map Section houses cartographic information in a variety of formats, e.g., aerial photographs, atlases, maps, microforms, digital data, and books. This guide provides information on the bibliographic access, the physical access, and the circulation policies related to these materials. Assistance in locating, using, and borrowing cartographic materials is provided by the staff at the Documents and Map Information and Circulation Desks, 3rd floor center, Main Library.

For general information about the Map Section, its location, hours, services and collections, see An Introduction to the Map Section.

For information about the antiquarian maps in the Special Collections Department see Cartographic Materials in the Special Collections Department.

For specialized cartographic assistance, please telephone for a reference appointment with the Map Librarian (312/996-2738) or send your question by E-mail (lib-maps@uic.edu).

Aerial Photographs and Photomaps

Bibliographic access:Aerial photographs are listed in the Sheet Map Catalog, 3rd floor center, Main Library. Access is by geographic area, e.g., Illinois, Chicago -- Aerial Photography; or by subject, e.g., Aerial Photography -- Illinois, Chicago. Additional aerial photographs are listed in UICCAT, the library's online catalog. Online access is by subject, e.g., s=Chicago Ill. -- Aerial Photographs. A one-sheet summary of all holdings is available in the Map Section. To identify the photographs or photomaps covering your area of interest, consult the graphic indexes available at the Documents and Map Information Desk. The orthophoto quads and orthophoto maps produced by the U.S. Geological Survey are indexed with and filed with their respective state topographic map series.
Physical access:Aerial photographs are housed in vertical filing cabinets and aerial photomaps are housed in horizontal map cases. All storage units are locked. Upon request, a member of the Documents and Map staff will unlock the appropriate unit and provide assistance in locating coverage of specific sites.
Circulation policy:Aerial photographs and photomaps circulate for one week and may be charged out at the Documents and Map Circulation Desk, 3rd floor center. Renewals may be made either in person, by telephone (312/996-2738), or through E-mail (lib-maps@uic.edu).
For information about the aerial photographs and photomaps of Chicago and the surrounding metropolitan area see Aerial Photographs and Photomaps.

Atlases

Bibliographic access: Atlases are listed only in UICCAT, the University Library's online catalog. Access is by author, title, subject, or keyword. Consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings to find the appropriate subject search term, e.g., s=Paris (France)--maps. The need for geographic access can often be met through the use of keyword searching, e.g., k=Australia and maps, k=Chicago and maps. It is important to note that keyword searches will also identify materials in the general book collection that may or may not be relevant to your needs.
Physical access:The atlases are shelved, either vertically or horizontally (** preceding the call number), at the north end of the Map Section and are available for use whenever the Main Library is open. Atlases published prior to 1900 and other atlases that need special handling are housed in storage. Atlases in storage may be requested at the Documents and Map Information Desk, 3rd floor center, and will be available for use the following day (weekdays only)
Circulation policy:Most atlases circulate and may be charged out at the Circulation Desk, 1st 1st floor south. One day loan of some non-circulating atlases may be approved at the discretion of the Map Librarian. Renewals, for circulating atlases, may be made either in person, by telephone (312/996-2724) or through E-mail (lib-circ@uic.edu).

Maps

Bibliographic access:Sheet maps and map series are listed in the Sheet Map Catalog, 3rd floor center, Main Library, and additional maps, generally from the post-1976 period are listed in UICCAT, the University Library's online catalog. See Atlases for suggestions on how to search for maps in UICCAT.
The Sheet Map Catalog is divided into the following sections:
  • by geographic area
  • by subject
  • by author-title (for pre-1900 maps only)
For maps of a geographic region (Europe) or a political division (Poland) consult the geographic area section of the catalog. The cards are arranged alphabetically by the name of the state, country, region, etc. which the map portrays. The general and topographic maps of a geographic/political area are listed first, in chronological order.
For example:
  • Illinois -1945
  • Illinois -1970
The subject maps for that geographic/political area are listed second, alphabetically by subject and chronologically within subject.
For example:
  • Illinois -Recreation - 1983
  • Illinois - Transportation, roads - 1962
  • Illinois - Transportation, roads - 1988
The maps of the geographic subdivisions within that geographic/political area are listed last, alphabetically by subdivision and chronologically within subdivision.
For example:
  • Illinois, Chicago - 1950
  • Illinois, Chicago Suburbs & Environs - 1979
  • Illinois, Cook Co. - 1975
  • Illinois, Northeast - Census districts - 1982
If the geographic/political area which you seek is not listed in the map catalog, remember that it may appear on a map of the larger area of which it is a part.
For example: Oahu Island may be found on maps of the state of Hawaii.
If you are looking for maps on a particular subject, not limited to a specific geographic area, you should consult the SUBJECT section of the catalog. The cards are arranged alphabetically by subject (and alphabetically by subject subdivision if any), then alphabetically by geographic/political area, and finally chronologically within the area.
For example:
  • Geology - Illinois - 1967
  • Geology - North America - 1981
  • Power, electric - Ohio - 1974
  • Power, thermal - Colorado - 1980
  • Transportation, roads - Illinois - 1962
  • Transportation, roads - Wisconsin - 1960
Consult the Subject Headings List on the map case beside the Sheet Map Catalog to find the appropriate search term.
Note: The Sheet Map Catalog does not include individual records for the individual sheets in the topographic and thematic map series published by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) or most other government map series. For information on specific USGS, DMA, NIMA, and NOS sheet holdings, consult the graphic and/or text indexes to these map series. These indexes are available at the Documents and Map Information Desk. Many of the USGS, DMA, NIMA, and NOS maps published after 1976 may also be listed in UICCAT, the Library's online catalog.
After identifying the maps of interest, note the call number and the location of the map.
For example: G4104 C6E2 1980 C64 vert file
Physical access:Individual sheet maps and map series are generally housed in the horizontal map cases or in the vertical file cabinets; these units are locked. Upon request, the Documents and Map staff will unlock the appropriate section and provide assistance in locating maps. Sheet maps in storage may be requested at the Documents and Map Information Desk, 3rd floor center, and will be available for use the following day (weekdays only).
Circulation policy: Most maps circulate for one week and may be checked out at the Documents and Map Circulation Desk, 3rd floor center. Maps that are in high demand for class assignments are restricted to "in Library" use and maps housed in the Special Collections Department are restricted to "in Department" use. Renewals, for circulating maps, may be made either in person, by telephone (312/996-2738) or through E-mail (lib-maps@uic.edu).

Digital Data

Bibliographic access:Cartographic information in digital form is listed in UICCAT, the Library's online catalog.
Physical access:Request this information at the Documents and Map Information Desk.
Circulation policy:These data do not circulate. Short term loan of some data may be made at the discretion of the Map Librarian.

Cartographic Reference

Bibliographic access:The Map Section maintains a small collection of reference books relating to cartographic materials (atlases, maps, etc.) and cartographic information services. The portion of the collection classified with Library of Congress call numbers may be accessed by using UICCAT, the Library's online catalog. Access is by author, title, subject, and keyword. UICCAT may also be used to identify additional resources on cartographic materials. The portion of the collection classified with Superintendent of Documents call numbers may be accessed by using the indexes to government documents located in the Documents Department. Titles published after 1976 may also be listed in UICCAT.
Physical access:The cartographic reference collection is shelved at the north end of the Map Section and is available for use whenever the Main Library is open.
Circulation policy:Most books in the cartographic reference collection do not circulate. One day loan of some non-circulating reference books may be arranged at the discretion of the Map Librarian.
