COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT POLICY
for
CARTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS and INFORMATION


The Map Section, located in the main library, is the University Library's primary repository for cartographic materials and information. Under the direction of the Map Librarian, who maintains liaison with the subject bibliographers, it acquires selec ted cartographic materials in support of the basic research and instructional mission of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Materials currently held in the main library are not duplicated when they can be transferred to the Map Section. When transfe r is not possible, materials needed for the provision of information services may be duplicated.

The Map Section, as a state site of the Earth Science Information Center (ESIC) network, is responsible for acquiring and providing public access to cartographic, hydrologic and geologic data (in all its formats), and to information (in all its formats ) about the data.

Guidelines on the types and formats of cartographic materials and information collected follow.

MAPS

The Map Section acquires general, topographic, and thematic, small-scale maps of the world, and medium- and large-scale maps of the United States with an emphasis on the Chicago area and the Midwest. Through its participation in the Federal Depository Library Program the Map Section acquires and retains publication catalogs, indexing tools, and maps from several Federal government agencies, e.g., , the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U. S. National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) [formerly the DMA and the AMS], the National Ocean Service (NOS), the U. S. Forest Service (FS), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Additional material, if needed to support the instructional and research needs of the University of Illinois at Chicago is purch ased as the budget allows.

1.Topographic Maps

Small-scale world coverage (preferred scale, 1:1,000,000) and medium-and large-scale coverage of the United States. Medium- and/or large-scale maps of other areas are accepted on deposit, or as gifts at the discretion of the Map Librarian. All editions of the topographic maps received through the USGS and the NIMA depository programs are retained.

2.General Maps

Small-scale maps of the world, hemispheres, continents, countries and regions to show relative location, boundaries, main transportation routes, etc.

3.Thematic Maps

a. Small-scale world coverage (preferred scale, 1:1,000,000) in the following order of preference: geology, economic, transportation, historic, political and others.
b. Medium- and large-scale maps of the U.S. in the order of preference listed above.
c. Maps of Illinois and the Chicago metropolitan area on all available topics at all scales.
d. All thematic maps received through the USGS depository program.

4.Road Maps

Official state highway maps for all U.S. states annually as staffing levels permit. All editions of the Illinois map are retained on a permanent basis. Road maps for other U.S. states are retained at a five-year interval.

5.County Maps

a. General and thematic maps of Illinois.
b. Selected maps for other states of the U. S.
c. All editions of the USGS County Map Series are retained.

6.City Maps

a. Cities and towns of Illinois at a ten-year interval as staffing levels permit.
b. The Chicago metropolitan area as available.
c. Maps of major U.S. cities at a five-year interval as staffing levels and budget permit.
d. U.S. state capitals and major foreign cities at a ten-year interval as staffing levels and budget permit.

7.Wall Maps

As classroom instructional items, they are generally not acquired. Exceptions to this policy are made at the discretion of the Map Librarian.

8.Antiquarian Maps

These maps are housed in the Special Collections Department, main library. The focus of this collection is Chicago, Illinois, the Great Lakes, and Eastern Europe and the Russian Empire. Additions that supplement existing strengths are made by purchas e as the budget allows and are accepted as gifts.

CHARTS

1.Aeronautical Charts

Selected editions of the aeronautical charts received as part of the NIMA and NOS depository agreements. (Although obsolete for navigation, small- and medium-scale charts provide topographic information that supplements the topographic map collection. )

2.Hydrographic and Nautical Charts

a. NIMA hydrographic charts are not selected.
b. NOS large-scale charts of Lake Michigan and medium-scale charts of the Great Lakes are purchased at a ten-year interval.
c. Other selected charts may be retained at the discretion of the Map Librarian.

ATLASES

1.General World Atlases

Selected general world atlases representative of major U.S. and foreign publishers.

2.Thematic Atlases

Topical atlases of the world with an emphasis on history and other curricular subjects.

3.National Atlases

National atlases as the budget allows.

4.State and Provincial Atlases

a. U. S. state atlases as available.
b. Selected provincial and regional atlases for other areas of the world.

5.County Atlases

Atlases of the six-county* area surrounding Chicago and selected atlases of Lake and Porter counties, Indiana from all time periods and on all topics. (*Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties)

6.City Atlases

a. Atlases of Chicago and the surrounding metropolitan area.
b. Selected atlases of major U.S. and foreign cities to support research and instructional needs as the budget permits.

7.Antiquarian Atlases

As gifts at the discretion of the Map Librarian.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY

1.Aerial Photography

Large-scale aerial photography and aerial photomaps of the city of Chicago and the surrounding six-county* area of Northeastern Illinois are acquired through gift and purchase as the budget allows. (*Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties )

2.Remote Sensing Imagery

a. Due to its high cost, remote sensing imagery is not purchased. Imagery of the Chicago area is accepted as a gift.
b. Map mosaics, created from remote sensing imagery, of the U.S. and its states.

DIGITAL DATA

1.CD-ROMs and diskettes

a. Cartographic information in digital formats as available through the Federal Depository Library Program.
b. Selected commercially-published digital products as the supporting hardware and software and the budget permits.
c. Other digital data as gifts at the discretion of the Map Librarian.

INTERNET

Access to government cartographic information and materials posted on the World Wide Web is available through the LAN at the Documents/Map Information Desk.

CARTOGRAPHIC REFERENCE

The Map Section maintains a small collection of reference books relating to cartographic materials and cartographic information services. Additional information related to cartographic materials may be found in other parts of the University Library's collections.

1.Gazetteers

a. Selected commercially-published world and national gazetteers.
b. Gazetteers of the states of the U.S. published by the U. S. Geological Survey (Prof. Paper 1200 and GNIS)
c. Gazetteers of foreign areas published by the NIMA [formerly DMA] and the Board on Geographic Names (BGN).

2.Glossaries and dictionaries

Selected cartographic, geographic, and geologic glossaries and dictionaries, foreign language map terminology glossaries and foreign language dictionaries.

3.Handbooks

Selected cartographic and geographic handbooks.

4.Cartography

Selected works on cartography, the history of cartography, map reading and the evaluation of maps and atlases. [Additional information may be found in other portions of the main library's collections.]

5.Cartobibliographies

Selected current and retrospective cartobibliographies.

6.Journals

Journals related to map librarianship. (Cartographic journals are housed in the main library's periodical collections.)

7.Cartographic publishers files

Catalogs, indexes, and price lists from selected domestic, foreign, governmental, and commercial publishers and dealers for all types of cartographic materials.

8.Map Libraries

Directories, acquisition lists and information on U.S. and foreign map collections.

9.Guidebooks

Guidebooks are not collected. Selected tourism information on the U.S., acquired as a gift, is retained on a short-term basis. (Guidebooks for the main library's book collections may be acquired at the discretion of the subject bibliographers.)
