Maps
We have over 172,000 maps, including historical topographic maps of the United States
in a various range of scales, topographic maps of the world, topographic and geologic maps of the United States and various historic maps of Chicago (note: maps published
prior to 1900 are in the Special Collection.) Map drawers are arranged by map series and/or by geography. Some poplar map
series, such as USGS historical topographic maps (i.e. 1:24K, or 7.5
minutes, topo maps), historic urban plan maps,
and navigational charts (vertical files), are grouped for users' convenience. Other various types of maps
(see "Var" on the image below) are organized by call number - G,
or "geography," class.

How to Locate Maps - "G" call number
*Please ask for assistance at the Map Section. The first thing that a map user needs to know is
the extent of the place that the
user would like to see. Would s/he want to see the entire world, or a country,
or a specific part of the town? This not only helps users to decide the types
and series of materials to use, but also helps users to decide where to look
for. For example, users who need to see a relatively large area, such as a region
that goes beyond national borders, are recommended to use atlases. Users
who are looking for a specific city or village are recommended to use
large-scale topographic maps and/or street maps.Once a user decides on the type of materials or series, a call number becomes an important key to locate
any cartographic materials. Call numbers for maps range
between G3180 and G9980. This "G" classification system for maps is
structured using geographical hierarchy.
Please also remember that maps are stored either in the map drawers
(unfolded/flat maps) or in the vertical file cabinets (folded maps). Although
most maps are stored in map drawers, it is advised to check the vertical file
cabinets also.
