Abstract
The Forest Preserve District of Cook County was created in 1914 with a mandate to “protect and preserve” the forests of Cook County. By 2004, the district had acquired more than 67,000 acres of forest lands. This collection contains the records of the district and other records that are relevant for the district’s history.

Scope and Contents

This series contains over one thousand (1,000) blueprints generated by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC), by other entities on the district's behalf, or by the National Park Service or other organizations. Researchers interested in building and construction projects might also wish to consult Series V, "Planning, Construction, and Development records," and Series 0 (zero), "Photographs and Illustrations."

Sub-series 2: Flood Control Project, Skokie Lagoons, 1920s-1930s   1.0 envelopes

Scope and Contents

The Skokie Lagoons project was a massive endeavor to develop the marsh areas around the Skokie River of northern Cook County, on FPDCC land. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, cooperated with the Forest Preserve District to employ thousands of young men to work on this project, which involved creating seven lagoons to re-beautify the landscape and alleviate seasonal flooding.

This sub-series includes nine (9) sketches done of the Skokie Lagoons Project. The size of these sketches ranges from 44 inches by 12 inches to 56 inches by 12 inches.

Researchers interested in other blueprints that deal with the Skokie Lagoons Project might wish to consult other sub-series in this collection, especially Series V, sub-series 6, "Bids and Blueprints"; Series VI, sub-series 1, "Master Plans and Control Plans"; and Series VI, sub-series 3, "Projects."

This sub-series contains blueprints that were unidentified either because they had been separated from the original project they belonged to or because they had not been numbered or otherwise named. The blueprints of this sub-series are of two types. The first has some notation concerning the approximate area the blueprint was designed to cover; these are the "Unidentified Blueprints with Known Locations." The second type lacks such a notation; these are the "Unidentified Blueprints without Known Locations."
