Consumer Health Databases

MedlinePlus

MedlinePlus is a goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. Health professionals and consumers alike can depend on it for information that is authoritative and up to date. MEDLINEplus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 650 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials.

PubMed

For more in-depth information the National Library of Medicine also provides free access to MEDLINE, the premier biomedical database. This resource includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.

MD Consult

Over 2,600 handouts, written for the patient, are available in MD Consult. Also available in MD Consult is drug information, 35 full text medical texts, 48 full-text clinical journals, over 600 practice guidelines, and weekly reviews of medicine in the popular press and media.

EBSCOHost

Alt Health Watch - This alternative health database provides full text for more than 140 publications in the collection, including full text for many peer-reviewed journals. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990.

Health Source-Consumer Edition - This database is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source - Consumer Edition features searchable full text for nearly 300 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Clinical Pharmacology - Clinical Pharmacology provides access up-to-date, concise and clinically-relevant drug monographs for all U.S. prescription drugs, hard-to-find herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new and investigational drugs.

UICCAT

UICCAT is UIC's online catalog. It contains holding records for books, journals, government documents, and other materials found in the collections of all UIC libraries. To find consumer health books on a particular topic, do a search for that particular subject combined with the additional search term "popular works". For example, if you were to search for a consumer health book on diabetes type "diabetes AND popular works"
