Nurse Theorists

This is a brief guide to selected sources of information on nurse theorists and nursing theory. The first listings on this page are databases to which the UIC Library subscribes. These can be accessed by anyone from the Library of the Health Sciences or elsewhere on the UIC campus. Access from other locations is limited to UIC students, faculty, and staff who have a valid netID and password. A link to freely available web sources is also included, as are books in the LHS collection. This is not a comprehensive list of resources. For further assistance please ask for help at Information Services desk.

Databases

  • MeSH/PubMed
This link takes you to MeSH, the Medical Subject Headings database. Search in this database with the term "Nursing Theory" (or other related terms), to find the "official" names MeSH uses for the subject you have in mind. Then, switch into the PubMed database (you can also do this from within MeSH) and use the term(s) you found to find articles. MeSH and PubMed are available to the general public for free, but UIC faculty, staff, and students can enter a version of PubMed that includes links to many online full-text journals.

Web Resources

Both depth and accuracy are highly variable, but the internet can be a good place to find information on nurse theorists and nursing theory. Here are some general sites to get you started.

  • ANA Hall of Fame
Many prominent nurse theorists have been inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame. Biographies and often, pictures, are available at this site.
  • Clayton College and State University Department of Nursing: Nursing Theory Page
This web site is divided into sections for over 30 nurse theorists, including Boykin and Schoenhofer, Fitzpatrick, and Hall. Each section contains at least one link to a comprehensive web page dedicated to a theorist. Some of the links contain online chat schedules with a nurse theorist, contact information, historical, and biographical information. This page also contains links to online resources such as governmental and statistical resources.
  • Nurse-Philosophy Listserv
Online forum for discussing philosophical issues in nursing.
  • Nursing Theory Network
Site with extensive information on theory, models, history, and resources.
  • Nursing Theory Page from NurseScribe
Information on nurse theorists and different health care models, with some related external links and a study guide.
  • Nursing Theory Page from Hahn School of Nursing and Science
Collaborative effort by an international group interested in developing a collection of resources about nursing theories throughout the world.

Audiotapes

The Library of the Health Sciences-Urbana has a collection of audiotapes that feature nurse theorists discussing their theories in their own words. To search for these tapes, please use UICCAT. Limit the search to LHS Urbana, search in the "any word, any where" box with the term "nurse theor?". You will retrieve at least 8 tapes. Some of the nurse theorists that we have on tape are Orem, Johnson, Newman, and Roy. The tapes are shelved on the second floor through the door on the left as you come up the stairs.

Please see the reference staff for any further questions. We are happy to help!
