Rockford and Urbana;
and the Science Library.

in the UIC Library?

include, but are not limited to: books and e-books; journals and magazines
in print and electronic form; online databases and indexes; government documents,
reports, maps, and microforms; archival resources, rare books, and manuscripts;

a request for an addition to the collection, visit the Collections

How do I find a book at the UIC Library?
To find books and other items at the UIC Library, search UICCAT,
the library catalog.
How do I find an article in a journal or magazine?
To find articles within a journal or a magazine, you need to use an article
index. Many of these indexes are available online to UIC users through the
UIC Library Website. To find the article index that best fits your subject,
see the Subject-area
List of Selected Databases. For tips about using article indexes in
the Liberal Arts and Sciences, consult the Self-Guided
Instruction page; and for help in the Biomedical Sciences, consult the
Online Help
Guides and Tutorials page.
How can I get help with my research?
You can get help with your research by consulting a reference or information
services librarian in person at any of the UIC Library locations.
You can also consult the Ask
A Librarian page for email, online chat, and telephone contact information.
How do I use a particular database or UICCAT?
The UIC Library maintains a set of subject guides, database instructions,
and tutorials for the databases that we offer. A list of database
guides and tutorials for Biomedical and Health Science topics is available,
as well as a list of guides
and tutorials in the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Can I access databases that the UIC Library subscribes
to from my home or office?
UIC users can access all library resources from home or office by navigating
to the resource through the library website as you would on campus. You
will need an Internet service provider (ISP) to access the Internet, and
when you select a resource, you will be prompted for your UIC Net ID and
Password (same as your email). For more information, see the Remote
Access to UIC Library Electronic Resources page.
If you don't currently have an ISP, UIC provides its users with access
to the Internet. For more information, see the
ACCC Dialin Services page. If you use UIC as your ISP, you will
not be re-prompted for your Netid and Password.
How do I know what journals UIC has?
UICCAT
includes information about both print and electronic journal holdings. There
is also a list
of Electronic journals which can be searched or browsed. Please consult
Finding
Journals at UIC for more information.
Can I renew items I borrowed from the Library?
Yes. You can do this directly through UICCAT.
Click on "My
Account," select your home library, enter your library ID number
(the 14 digit number above the barcode on your i-card), enter your last name,
and click the Login button. A list of the material you have checked either
at UIC or through Illinet Online out will appear and you can check the boxes
to the left of the items you wish to renew.
How can I get an item that is currently checked out
by someone else?
You can recall material checked out to another UIC user by using the online
Recall request
form. Recall requests may require a significant wait, so patrons are advised
that they may instead place their request through ILLINET
Online, a shared catalog of about 50 academic institutions in Illinois,
to locate the item. Once you find the book, you may either go to that library
in person and check it out with your I-Card, or use the "Request"
button at the top of the page to have it sent to your local UIC Library
(usually in about one week).
What does it mean if an item is at the "Reserve
Desk"?
Reserves are materials set aside by instructors for a specific class. This
allows availability of materials to all members of the class. Typically,
items on reserve include books, copies of articles, exams, homework solutions,
and other required reading materials. For more information about Course
Reserves, select this
link.
What if the material I am looking for is not available
in the UIC Library system?
If you are sure the material is not part of the UIC Library collection,
use ILLINET
Online, a shared catalog of about 50 academic institutions in Illinois,
to locate the item; ILLINET is the fastest, easiest way to get the material
you need. If the item is a book, once you locate it, you may either go to
that library in person and check it out with your i-card, or use the "Request"
button at the top of the page to have it sent to your local UIC Library.
The book will usually arrive in about a week.
If you do not find your book, or the material you need is an article from
a journal, you will need to fill out an online Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form
for the book
or article
so we can borrow it for you from another library. You can also find these
items and request them directly by using WorldCat,
a shared library catalog of libraries all over the world. The arrival time
of materials placed through ILL varies.

library ID number. Follow the instructions. Be sure to indicate
the location you wish to pick the material up at. (Journals cannot be
requested).
