UIC Students, Faculty and Staff are responsible for keeping their contact information up to date and can make changes using the Patron Information Update form.
Non-UIC Library users may also have borrowing privileges depending on their institution.
- Faculty from CIC (Committee for Institutional Cooperation) and CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) institutions may borrow LHSC materials with a valid ID from their institutions.
- Faculty from Rush and from John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County may borrow books from LHSC upon presentation of a valid ID card with a "faculty" sticker from their institution.

- Corporate Members may also borrow books from LHSC with a valid corporate membership card.
More information on borrowing privileges can be found at: Library to Library agreements.
Loan Periods
- Books
- Books circulate for two (2) weeks. Books may be renewed for additional two-week periods until someone places a recall/request on the book. Books may be returned at any UIC library location.
- "New Book Shelf"
- Books located on the "New Book Shelf" are restricted to in-library use for a period of one week. The date stamped on the yellow date-due slip indicates when the book will begin regular circulation. Users may reserve these books at the Circulation Desk.
- Journals
- Journals do not circulate. Any exemption from this policy must be requested from the Circulation Supervisor and will be granted only in exceptional circumstances.
- Reserve Materials
- Reserve materials circulate anywhere from two (2) hours, to overnight, to two (2) days, or to three (3) days. In all cases they are non-renewable. Two-hour reserve materials are restricted to in-library use only. Reserve materials should aways be returned directly to the LHSC Circulation Desk.

Materials may be renewed in person, by telephone, online via email or throughUICCAT.

- Online Email
- Send a message to the library via LIB-MAIL at http://www.uic.edu/depts/lib/libmail/. Circulation staff will renew material for you.
- Online through UICCAT
- Access your account at http://uiccat.lib.uic.edu, select "My Account" and login using your last name and Library ID number (the 14 digit number on your i-card beginning with 28198). Check the box next to the items checked out and click on 'Renew Selected Items'.
Recalled Materials
UIC Library materials may be recalled for use by other patrons. A recall notice shortens the loan period. Such items cannot be renewed and must be returned by the revised due date. Recall notices noting the new due date are sent out by the Library.
Items not returned by the recall due date are handled as lost books. Lost books are billed a minimum of $75.00 per item plus a $25.00 non-refundable processing fee.
To Recall Materials
Items that have the status of "Checked Out" may be recalled. To place a recall, use the "Request" feature in UICCAT and select the "Recall" option. A second option is to fill out the Place a Save/Recall a Book form.
Recalled items will take time to become available. Notices are sent to the user who has checked out the item; that user then has a period of time in which to return the item. As a result, it may be faster to find the item through other libraries. Users are encouraged to check I-Share to determine whether copies are available through that catalog for requesting. Such requests are more likely to be filled faster if available. Users may also request checked out items through Interlibrary Loan.
Missing Materials
Patrons are encouraged to inform circulation staff when materials cannot be located in the stacks. Forms for missing materials are available at both the Circulation Desk and the Reference Desk. Please complete the form and return it to the Circulation Desk to alert staff to search for this item.
Overdue Fines
Books
Overdue fines are not assessed for regularly circulating books in the general collection unless they have been recalled. After 45 days, the item is declared "Lost" and lost material charges apply.
Reserve Materials
Patrons are billed a non-refundable fine of $.02 per minute once reserve materials are overdue. The maximum fine for overdue reserve materials is $20.00.
Interlibrary Loan Materials
Overdue materials from another library are subject to the fine policy of that library.
Lost Materials
Books
Books that have not been renewed or returned within 45 days of the due date are declared lost. The replacement charge is $75.00, plus a $25.00 non-refundable processing fee.
Interlibrary Loan Materials
Overdue materials from another library are subject to the fine policy of that library.
