The Library of the Health Sciences - Chicago provides a number of services to assist patrons with disabilities in library resources and services. Users needing special assistance are encouraged to ask at the Reference or Circulation Desk.

Finding and Retrieving Materials

LHSC offers one-on-one research consultations with a librarian to assist patrons in locating books, journal articles and other materials to meet their information needs. To set up an appointment for research assistance, call (312) 996-9163.

Circulation Staff will retrieve material from the stacks for any user with special needs. There is no charge for this service. Turnaround time will vary, depending on the time of the request, but service is guaranteed within one working day. Circulation Staff can also assist users with the checkout process. If the required item cannot be located in the LHSC collection, staff will help the patron fill out the appropriate form for interlibrary loan. Books can be renewed by telephone (312-996-8966) or by email

Photocopy Services

Self Service:

For patrons with visual impairments, photocopiers can enlarge documents up to 800%. Buttons and controls on all the photocopy machines are in the same location, making them easy to use.

Mediated:

Circulation Staff will charge $.10/page for mediated copy services done for patrons with disabilities.

Adaptive Technology

The Reference area on the first floor has the following equipment to assist patrons with special needs:

  • An adjustable table that allows height adjustment to accommodate patrons who use wheelchairs
  • Open Book, software that allows a user to convert text from scanned images to be read, stored, or formatted for other programs
  • A scanner for magnifying text
  • JAWS Screen Reader, software that provides speech output. Headphones are available at the Circulation Desk
  • Magnifier to magnify the text of a book or journal.

The adaptive technology stations are open to eligible patrons on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are not required. Library staff can assist patrons in setting up adaptive technology. Please ask at the Reference Desk. Students in need of further training must contact the Office for Disability Services at (312) 413-2183. Patrons from within the community who require assistance and training in using adaptive technology should contact the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind at 1850 W. Roosevelt, (312) 666-1331.

For patrons with hearing impairments, a sign language interpreter is available during regular business hours (8:30am-5:00pm) Mondays through Fridays. Appointments should be scheduled in advance for this service. Contact (312) 996-9163 to schedule an appointment.
