Requirements for Teaching Materials
Copyright is important
and it is your responsibility to ensure legal use of copyrighted materials.
This guide outlines ways to obtain copyright, how the library can help you provide
access to copyrighted material, and suggests areas for finding images where
copyright may not be required. As a very general interpretation, something can
be used spontaneously once for educational purposes - if it's used again (i.e.
next year when you teach the class again) it is no longer spontaneous and permission
is needed to use the copyrighted material.
You may use images/ illustrations
PowerPoint as part of your lectures if they are used to illustrate your own
teaching, or if the reproduction is for commentary on the illustration. Both
of these are fair uses - even if they are repeated - if they are for teaching.
The images in the PowerPoints must always contain commentary and a citation/credit.
It is also advisable to include a link to the website from which the image was
taken. However, such lectures must be placed in Blackboard from which the registered
students can view, download or print individually using their own fair use rights.
It is not fair use for the instructor to distribute the material in print or
on CD. Articles themselves should not be placed in Blackboard - but a link may
be made in Blackboard to the online version or a scanned copy of the article
in E-Res (see below).
Articles
and Book Chapters
- If
an article (or book chapter) is not available electronically at UIC
request that it be put in ERes (Electronic Reserves
Service)
- Put
a link to the article from Blackboard or class materials to E-Res
(students will need a password to access the materials)
- If
we do subscribe to the material electronically you can provide links
directly to the electronic articles
Images
Options for including images
and ensuring necessary copyright:
- Obtain copyright
directly
- Pay attention
to the duration of the copyright permission
- A copyright
fee may be involved
- Sources of
free images
- Options that
do not require you to get copyright permissions
- Put images
in ERes and link to the image in ERes
- Link to the
image that you find on the web instead of including it directly in your
PowerPoint presentation
- Limit the
use of an image to one time (keep it spontaneous)
- Use images/ illustrations PowerPoint
as part of your lectures if they are used to illustrate your own teaching,
or if the reproduction is for commentary on the illustration. The images
in the PowerPoints must always contain commentary and a citation/credit.
Such lectures must be placed in Blackboard from which the registered students
can view, download or print individually using their own fair use rights.
It is not fair use for the instructor to distribute the material in print
or on CD.

personal computer or campus computer.
·
materials available within
the ERes system are password protected.
·
electronic reserve material
can be accessed directly through ERes, through links provided on webpages (including

What types
of materials can be placed on Electronic Reserve?
·
lecture notes
·
sample exams
·
government publications

a journal issue
·
a chapter from a book
(10% of book library doesn’t own, 30% if library owns book)
·
digitized graphics and
image files
·
consult with Reserve
staff regarding other types of documents that may be placed on Electronic Reserve.
Can I place multimedia files
on Electronic Reserve?
The
ERes system provides for the use of a variety of file types for
electronic
access. Document files, such as MS-Word or PDF, Power Point
presentations,
wave, audio and video files can all be made accessible via the Internet.
Call Gail Davis (309) 671-8490 about ERes
If you choose to distribute an article
yourself either in print, online, or through CD, repeated distribution requires
copyright permissions. If you put the article in E-Res - the library will obtain
copyright, and then it is the student's responsibility to print. If you choose
to distribute PowerPoints handouts (or other documents that you have created)
with images (print or on CD), you must obtain copyright permissions for each image.
